‘I invited her in… and she took everything

When Mel hears from a long-lost friend in need of help, she doesn’t hesitate to invite her to stay. Mel and Abi were best friends back in the day, sharing the highs and lows of student life, until Mel’s unplanned pregnancy made her drop out of her studies.

Now, seventeen years later, Mel and Abi’s lives couldn’t be more different. Mel is happily married, having raised her son on her own before meeting her husband, Ben. Now they share gorgeous girls and have a chaotic but happy family home, with three children.

Abi, meanwhile, followed her lover to LA for a glamorous life of parties, celebrity and indulgence. Everything was perfect, until she discovered her partner had been cheating on her. Seventeen years wasted, and nothing to show for it. So what Abi needs now is a true friend to lean on, to share her grief over a glass of wine, and to have some time to heal. And what better place than Mel’s house, with her lovely kids, and supportive husband…

This dark, unsettling tale of the reunion of long-lost friends is thoroughly gripping exploration of wanting what you can’t have, jealousy and revenge from Sunday Times Number One bestseller Adele Parks.

I usually only listen to audiobooks on the commute to and from work. This one however, I just couldn’t stop listening to, and before I knew it, I had listened to it all!

An addictive listen!

Not at all challenging, and you could see what was coming. Just really easy listening, which we all need sometimes!

A little predictable but still a good listen

Ok so I admit right now that I knew what the plot would be from reading the title, subtitle and the synopsis. Maybe I guessed lucky, maybe I am good at reading people or maybe the blurb was a giveaway. Who knows. That explains the 4 stars for 'Story' in my review.
But nevertheless I was entralled and intrigued enough with the characters to listen to this story anyway. How it all unfolds is like car crash tv; you can't help it, you have to keep listening to see what a character says or what they do next.
It is a very very good story with many more layers than I guessed at the very beginning.
The characters are deep, believable, some are infuriating, others make you want to wrap your arms around them because they are so nice.

I listened to the interview at the end, albeit originally I was going to skip it. And I am so glad I did listen because it was a fun, informative chat that tied some things up and raised other questions along the way.

I have to say that while the name and front cover image did originally make me stop scrolling and seriously consider listening to this book it was seeing the narrator's name that sold it to me. Joanne Froggatt is an excellent narrator and really brought all the characters to life for me. I like this lady after seeing her act in various shows over the years but Downton Abbey is my all time favourite!

Overall a fabulous story and one I highly recommend.

Just listen to it and allow it all to unfold

I really enjoyed this book. Very well read by Joanne. Although I guessed fairly early on some of the plot it was still very gripping.

Great listen
