About this listen

Penguin presents the audiobook edition of I Am Missing by Tim Weaver. Read by Joe Coen, Charlotte Ritchie and featuring the author himself.

When a young man wakes up bruised and beaten, with no memory of who he is or where he came from, the press immediately dub him 'The Lost Man'.

Naming himself Richard Kite, he spends the next ten months desperately trying to find out who he is. But despite media appeals and the efforts of the police, no one knows him.

Richard's last hope may be private investigator David Raker - a seasoned locator of missing people. But Raker has more questions than answers.

Who is Richard Kite?

Why does no one know him?

And what links him to the body of a woman found beside a London railway line two years ago?

Could Richard be responsible for her death - or is he next?

Critic reviews

Praise for I Am Missing
I love the brilliant opening twist - a missing person with no memory searching for himself. It had me racing to the end (Fiona Barton)
Tim Weaver is the rising star of British crime and I Am Missing will haunt your dreams (Tony Parsons)
Tim Weaver writes books so meticulously researched that the reader is educated as well as entertained, enthralled and intrigued. David Raker is a most complex and engaging investigator, each case leaving its mark on his soul, and ours (Liz Nugent)
Wow, I'm going to be thinking about this book for a long time! Such an original premise and so compelling that I didn't want to put it down. Tim Weaver takes us through a range of emotions; I went from being terrified one minute to sad the next. The writing is beautiful and the plot so cleverly constructed I never guessed any of the twists. I enjoyed it so much I'm now going to read the rest of the David Raker series (Claire Douglas)
A really exciting, interesting and genuinely original read. I had no idea where it was going (Gillian McAllister)

Having read a number of excellent books by this author, I was a little disappointed by this one. The plot was too implausible for the reader to be drawn into it and the convoluted series of events seemed to drag on for far too long. It was hard to accept that the headmaster of a top public school would in fact be a mass murderer or that the disappearance of a number of Argentinian women would have gone almost unnoticed. One also had to wonder how Raker would be reimbursed for all his efforts and particularly his travelling expenses, which must have been enormous.
There were, however, redeeming features in this novel. The descriptions of the island, its weather and its landscape, were highly effective in building up the brooding atmosphere at the centre of the novel.
To sum up, I found the novel too long and too complicated but I do not think this will put me off reading more of Mr. Weaver' s stories in the future.

Not the best Tin Weaver book I have read.

An unusual twist in this one - Raker isn't searching for a missing person as he has in the previous books, but a missing identity. A man with no past, apparently, leads Raker from an unidentified female corpse having carnations anonymously delivered around her place of execution, to an exclusive and sinister school protecting its secrets a little too well, and then to a far flung island with deep seated secrets of its own to protect, with monsters and plenty more murders along the way. Great page turner, well paced, well read, huge fun to listen to (spot the authors voice!) and frankly, sad it has come to an end.

Another Raker thrill ride!

Good idea! But I felt it went all around the houses when I could have went straight through. Could have been half the size and with that more enjoyable. You would be forgiven if you thought this was the authors first book with the way it is written and descriptions used. Saying all this, I did like it but it went on far to long for the story that it panned out to be in the end.

All around the houses
