Summary

David escapes from the concentration camp where he has spent his entire life and flees across Europe. He is utterly alone – who can he trust? What will await him? And all the while, how can he be sure that they won’t catch up with him...David learns that his polite manner, his haunted eyes and his thin features are strange to other people. He must learn to fend for himself in this strange new world.

This is The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas meets Jonathan Safran Foer for children. An incredible story of survival against all odds and self discovery.

I AM DAVID

One of the most memorable books I read as a teenager. Listening to it on Audible reduced me ti tears again. The narrator was brilliant. The plot is beautifully structured and extremely touching. It tells of a boy born into a concentration camp, escaping into the world and how he survives on his way home to a place he does not know. I would highly recommend it.

Amazing journey

Love it. Start to finish. Great cross country adventure novel for all ages. Very well read. Really transports you away across the fields and on all the trips David takes. Great escapism.

Moving, uplifting, absorbing

This book made a profound impression on me as a child. Revisiting it many years later, in this beautifully narrated audiobook, I loved it even more. One review mentions the reader's rather flat, monotone voice but I think the calm, matter of fact way that he reads is very much in tune with the main character's personality, and all the minor characters are sensitively and convincingly voiced. A superb listen.

What a wonderful story!

This is my favourite audiobook so far. I bought it based on the good reviews and I wasn't disappointed. I must admit, I am into World War 2 novels at the moment but even if I wasn't, I would still love this book. The writing is superb and the narration very good. The story is simple but very thought provoking. I will now buy the paperback version and read it with my 10 year old son.

I read this at school.....

...decades ago and the storyline made such an impact on me that I’ve read it again several times. It’s lovely having it read to me so I can get on with jobs at home. The narrator doesn’t have many changes of tone in his voice so it can be a little monotonous.

Character of a Child

This is quite simply one of the most beautiful, heart rendering stories I have ever heard. Breaking down every barrier, looking deep into the human spirit, revealing the good in a boy who had every reason to be bitter, to be broken beyond repair, this historical tale brings the reader from the child's escape from a concentration camp through his journey through Europe. The genuine, forthright way that David deals with his environment, the people he meets, those who would harm him or help him is touching, amazing, thought provoking. That a child who had escaped from a lifetime in a concentration camp could have such compassion and reasoning of right and wrong, that he would choose to believe in "the God of the green pastures" . . . the God of the David in the Bible . . . well, it goes to show that words, even few words spoken to children with ears to hear are sometimes retained. Though the book is historical fiction, it is true to the times, and well could have happened. God bless those who lost family members in the concentration camps . . . God bless those who survived . . . and God help us all who let it happen.

Well worth a listen

I've loved this book since I had to read it in year 8 at school. The story is intriguing and the main character, David, grows and develops as the story unfolds. It was well read and flowed smoothly. I'd definitely recommend this one!

What a beautiful story

Loved the story, how it unfolded. I was pressed with the fact of how much we take for granted. Life is beautiful and we are blessed. God’s sovereignty was portrayed beautifully. Recommend.

Wonderful

My sixth grade teacher read this to us once and for some reason I still remember it, at least bits and pieces, till now almost two decades later. I decided to hear it again and I'm glad I did. The narration was excellent. The story is exquisite, with so many important themes and I think some gospel overtures as well. Very well worth it!

Visually powerful narrative

Beautifully told and evocative of the long hard road life poses for many of us. Thoroughly recommend this, I then encourage preteens to read to learn how to think quickly to solve issues they might face in unknown situations.
