Branagh excels in portraying the writer's self-pitying internal monologue and anchors it to the story's comic tone, using a light but precise touch to bring out the humor in the writer's repetitive admonishments of silence, his lack of self-awareness, and the attempts of his hapless family members to accommodate him.
