About this listen

I guess trying to catch the bus with your laces undone isn’t such a smart decision after all…

One fatal collision later, and I’m facing my judgment. As it turns out, I’ve been a lazy sob, and my short, uneventful life of playing games and getting up late wasn’t worth much. And so I don’t qualify to move on to the afterlife.

I try to argue to the goddess in front of me that I do have skills, that it was hard work playing those simulation and management games. But she will not concede.

In the end, I manage to get the benefit of the doubt, and a wager is made. To test my claims, I’ll be sent to a desolate, Level 1 village with the mission to make it thrive. If I fail or die, the goddess will bring me back to my old life, back to the drudge of working at the grocery store.

But that’s not going to happen. I will prove that all these countless hours spent in front of my computer were not in—

Ack, my head! Where the hell have I landed? Looks like a dilapidated farm, with a few huts scattered about. Qualifies as a desolate village, alright. I can’t believe it. This is it! I’m actually doing this! But where do I even begin…Yes, first, find the Mayor…but then what, convince her to hand over the keys so I can work my magic? Could it be that simple?

Oh, there she is. Uh, hello? Hmm, why isn’t she waking up? Maybe I should go look for some quest to do in the meantime. Uh, are these goblins I see there on the road?

“You are under attack!”

Dang.

This is the story of a civil servant but in a fantasy setting.

Not a Town management story and definitely not a real LitRpg. Although these features are definitely present they are barely relevant and almost never interacted with by the protagonist. No stat screens and no progression fantasy.

On the plus side, this is actually a well written and narrated story, albeit lackluster, that avoids most cliches of the genre.

im going against the other reviews here so so make it clear its not just thrown in to up the number i will explaun why, firstly it is civil servent but as the tital states humble begginings and with how it is the MC has to start somewhere like all great book series it always comes down to book one is chaper one overall, its a very good start it truly is and i have spent thousands if hours listning to these kind of bioks to list Civ CEO just for one as well as many LitRPG books it has been a few years since this came out and im hoping the writer hasnt given up as it truly is a slended startt i am absolutly hoping for a second book and to be preformed by the vesy same narrator as he did an amazing job, i hope many others kisten to this book and write good revies as i downt want the auther losing heart on this series as it could truly be a great multi book story, so this book gets a truly deserved ❤️ As all my reviews on here get as i only comment on ones i truky enjoy and this one is one of them it will truly be a shame is this is the only book but it was still well time spent even if it was a short book of 11hrs, please pleas please write the continuation if the auther rwads this i truly apreciated the time spent on it and the truly great naration thank you! and i hope others read this and give it a try and review well.

I was expecting something like CivCeo in regards to village management, but as stated in the other review, this is the story of a civil servant.
The narration is fine, the story easy to listen too but while I would be tempted to listen to another story just to see how it pans out, I am not massively invested in the story.

I feel the next book will make it or break it for me, the cast of characters have come together as you have the protagonist, the farmers, the witch, the alchemist the goblin and the bard.
I don’t know if this is good or not but I predict the witch alchemist making a fortune while the farm ramps up, followed by some type of goblin related issue.

Hopefully the next book is longer as this one felt short and lacking but was still somewhat enjoyable. If your wanting a chilled out audiobook while you do other things then this maybe for you.

Decent but lacking

The story kept me engaged throughout. The narration was solid and his voice was great to listen to.
