About this listen

‘One of the greatest ever writers for children’ – Garth Nix

‘A true original’ – Katherine Rundell

‘Truly magical … Guaranteed to leave you gasping’ The Bookseller

‘She is the best writer of magical fantasy for children’ Evening Standard

In the land of Ingary, where seven league boots and invisibility cloaks exist, young Sophie Hatter catches the unwelcome attention of the Witch of the Waste and is put under a spell . . .

Deciding she has nothing more to lose, Sophie makes her way to the moving castle that hovers on the hills above her town, Market Chipping. But the castle belongs to the dreaded Wizard Howl, whose appetite, they say, is satisfied only by the souls of young girls…

There Sophie meets Michael, Howl’s apprentice, and Calcifer the fire demon, with whom she agrees a pact. Her entanglements with Calcifer, Howl and Michael and her quest to break her curse come alive with Diana Wynne Jones’s unique combination of magic, humour and imagination.

Delighted to find an unabridged version of this fantastic story. Brilliantly narrated too. Kristin Atherton vividly portrays the various characters. Throughly enjoyed it and looking forward too more unabridged versions like this in the series.

Unabridged with great narration

I loved this version of the story. Totally worth getting and it brought a smile to my face being transported back into the land of Ingary. I really hope we get the rest of the trilogy.

i previously purchased the version read by john sesions , whjich was a little grating , so was very happy to find it had been rerecorded , together with the 2nd and 3rd books in the trilogy. These are all
wonderfull stories to be read or lisened to by young and very old children (60 yrs) such as my self. A wounderful story with a female protagonist ... I strongly recomend ...

i have always loved this story
