About this listen

Anyone who reads this will be delighted by the great common sense of Hudson’s observations and insights. A splendid book...chock-full of goodness and I can’t think of anyone I know who wouldn’t benefit from reading it.
Marcus Berkmann, Daily Mail

'A brilliant, brilliant book.'
Chris Evans

What is the connection between crawling through a jungle and your ‘to do’ list? What can ejecting out of a stealth bomber teach you about the importance of thinking the worst? What can surviving in extreme situations teach us about surviving everyday life?

John Hudson, Chief Survival Instructor to the British Military, knows what it takes to survive. Combining first-hand experience with 20 years of studying the choices people have made under the most extreme pressure, How to Survive is a lifetime’s worth of wisdom about how to apply the principles of survival to everyday life.
The cornerstone of military survival (surviving anything) is understanding the relationship between effort, hope and goals – a mindset that can be transposed anytime, anywhere. In How to Survive you will learn how this template for survival can be applied to any situation in your everyday life.

Through gripping first-hand accounts of near disaster and survival stories from across the extreme world you will learn that by following these principles you can develop the mindset that will allow you to make better decisions under pressure, which are as equally applicable to first dates and presentations as to climbing Everest and getting lost at sea.

Critic reviews

John is the top survival brain in the British Forces today. He trains the trainers. His expertise extends far beyond this area into the deeper ethos behind survival . . . He is what a lot of so-called “survival experts” want to be (Alf Evans, UK Military Aviation Survival Equipment Trials Officer)

The book also discusses how to apply the survival principles in mundane life as well as emergency situations and alot more.. it also covers true survival stories that went wrong & right. The way this book is narrated * is clever * it is done in a way to break down the information as stories, so it sinks in. Very entertaining.

excellent

This is the type of book that should be taught at school.
then a week away for the children to practice what this type of all round life skills are within this book.
Not just survival in the wild but life skills for the office and day to day.

A great book everyone should hear.

a clear, concise and very fascinating insight into survival mentality which instantly improves one's ability to tackle regular daily struggles as well as build confidence about how to overcome the unlikelyhood of facing a real survival situation

as much a self help book as a guide to survival

Even as I was listening to the first few chapters I was putting plans into place to use this brilliant book to make me more productive in all aspects of my life.
This book is full of inspiring stories, but John’s brilliance is where he has dissected them and told us how we can easily use the skills in every day life!
Without wishing to sound cliché this book will change how I run many aspects of my life!
Fantastically read by the author.
I have no intention of living off monkeys bums!

Absolutely Brilliant

Amazing tales of survival and hardship in some of the most extreme environments as well as help, information, tips and pointers of how the knowledge gained in a survival situation can be used in managing our every day lives. I wouldn't categorise it as a self help book as such but it certainly has an element of that. Overall really well read. Sometimes when the authors choose to read the book instead of opting for a professional narrator it goes tits up and it's a struggle to listen to an otherwise brilliant book...not this time. John comes across well in this audiobook. would love him write a more biographical book. Think that would be Awesome.
