Michael Heppell has spent his life studying successful people, attempting to distil what it is that the very best do that others don't. The Self Illusion provides a fascinating examination of how the latest science shows that our individual concept of a self is in fact an illusion. Most of us believe that we possess a self - an internal individual who resides inside our bodies, making decisions, authoring actions and possessing free will. The feeling that a single, unified, enduring self inhabits the body is compelling and inescapable. But that sovereignty of the self is increasingly under threat from science as our understanding of the brain advances.

Best audio book I've listened to all year
- By extraordinary girl on 18-05-20
Summary
Every now and then a self-help book comes along that questions the very nature of happiness, shakes the very foundation of all the things you hold dear, and forces you to reconsider every assumption you've ever made. This isn't one of those books.
How to Do Everything and Be Happy is a book for ordinary people. With ordinary lives. It's for people who have been ambling along and wondering why they're not - well - just that little bit happier. It's a book for most people. It's a book for you.
Mumbo jumbo and jargon free, How to Do Everything and Be Happy is direct, practical, occasionally witty, and stuffed full of ways to make your life just that bit happier. If you've got a brain in your head, if you can pick up a pen, if you've got half an inkling about what makes you smile, How to Do Everything and Be Happy will show you how to fit those things into your life and, as a consequence, feel much, much happier.

Simple. Sensible. Salubrious. Sharp.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book by the good Mr Peter Jones. I've read half a tonne of self help and personal development books, but Peter's approach is both a pleasant distillation of other good material, as well as a welcome divergence from the traditional, somewhat overly heavy, personal development tomes. With a great balance of science, sense, and practical guidance that is INCREDIBLY easy to implement, follow, and stick with - I would highly recommend this book to both newbies, and seasoned self-help readers alike. Expect a pleasant, funny, chatty, and useful journey that will help you make "those" changes you've wanted to make sometime to make yourself.... well.... happier!

What a great book!
A very accessible, practical guide to getting to most out of your life. It covers lots of ideas that I will be trying out over the next few months. However, the book offers these ideas without being in any way preachy or condescending, remembering that people are all different - and offering advice on how you can adapt the ideas to make them work for you.
It is read by the author who has a very friendly, warm and informal style - highly recommended
I really enjoyed it!

Just Buy It
What a stunningly well written - and narrated book (narration by the author). This is not the first edition - and it shows. All the little niggling things have been covered - and Peter Jones is at pains to say 'if this particular idea doesn't work for you - don't do it'. I can't think that I will do everything he recomends in his book, but I have implented some of his ideas (probably do more aftrer re-listening) and feel I am in better control of my life already. Not completely, but few people have the luxury of being in complete control, life keeps getting in the way, but I am certainly not living 'life by default' now!
If you can't gain something from this book you are either perfect (so won't even be bothering to read this) or you are happy living a life of chaos.

Not fo me!
Found my self not wanting to finish this book, starting off by reccomending everyone should take a day off work every month to have a "Boxing day" a day off for yourself which I though was quite a good idea! and looked forward to the next chapter, however for me after that it just died of death. Each chapter being like Groundhog day, having simular days with different titles! Making lists, diaries and collecting reciepts and sticking them in a box and then in an attic.
Peter Jones admits that he done this book by taking several books on board and then writing his own. Im giving this book 2 stars, perhaps its just not my type of book so Ill give Peter the benifit of the doubt and give him an extra star for luck!!

Nice ideas but...
Seems like this book is intended to be a self help life changing book for those of us without much inclination to get off the sofa, never mind sail around the world on a self built canoe.
If "Getting things done" and "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" are really beyond you, then this has some nice ideas, but if you need to be reminded at the end of each chapter to buy a diary (yes Peter, I do have a diary), then perhaps you'd be better off sticking in the fiction section.
On the brighter side, I took away some interesting ideas, and warmed rapidly to Peter himself who combines an excellent written style with great narration - a rare combination.

Real, funny and fun!
Peter Jones has a charming style that makes you think "he'd be a good bloke to have a drink with!". Even my 8yo daughter got into this audio book... and she's not exactly laden down with juggling the multiple heavy responsibilities of modern life.
Perhaps more importantly, the message, content and strategies within the book made me remember what fun there is to be had from life and focus on getting it. Dream big and buy this book to set you on your way to turning them into reality!

Dreadful and anooying
How can you be happy when being patronised?
I switched off mentally almost immediately as I didn't feel he was trying to connect with me, rather he was telling me.
The narrator blended in to the blah blah blah background.
Too many cliches, too many awful attempts at acting as if he was your friend talking with you in the pub. But it doesn't work. The author would do well to employ a professional narrator.
The content, after chapter three was not clear. The only thing I remember was hearing the words "diary" and "Boxing Day" over and over again, so I leaned over an switched it off.
Wasted my money on this one. Don't do the same.

A fun way to get the message
What did you like most about How to Do Everything and Be Happy?
Okay - if you're American then you may struggle with this book. If you let it, it will change your life with a healthy dose of dry, British humour. The messages aren't that new - it's the same overall idea expressed in Getting Things Done with a twist.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I laughed out loud a few times and immediately bought another Peter Jones book (How to Eat Loads and Stay Slim) as soon as I finished it.
Any additional comments?
My only criiticism is that I would have liked some printed resources alongside the audiobook. Hmmm... I might need to get a printed version, too. Damn. I hate it when that happens.

short and simple but good advice
Is there anything you would change about this book?
no
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
I thought it was brief but the end summarized the book well.
What does Peter Jones bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Im assuming he read it the way he intended it to be read when he wrote it. I prefer audible books that are read by the authors for that same reason.
Did How to Do Everything and Be Happy inspire you to do anything?
yes, it inspired me to take more action in achieving my personal goals and to live life to the fullest everyday, or at least as much as possible.
Any additional comments?
This book succeeded in addressing a somewhat serious topic with a sense of humor.

Best
What was one of the most memorable moments of How to Do Everything and Be Happy?
Too many to list!
What does Peter Jones bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The accent and British humor, a must listen instead of read!
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
"What do you want?!"
Any additional comments?
I have to say my most favorite book from Audible.com, love your voice, humor and of course the topic! I relisten to the chapters while at work, in the car, etc.. Thanks!

Disappointing
I did not find this book very useful. Since I had bought the book, I forced myself to listen to the whole thing, hoping to glean something of use, but was disappointed. One of his main recommendations is to take multiple days off, on a regular basis, for this or that purpose. For those of us who work more than a 40 hour week (or even for those who work just 40 hours) it is not a very practical suggestion. His other recommendations of writing down goals and of affirmations are not new. I cannot think of anything I took away from this book.
