About this listen

’The lack of information around how ADHD and autism shows up in adults means that many of us have been assuming we were anxious, not working hard enough, or just entirely failing altogether.’ – Jess Joy and Charlotte Mia

Written by two late-diagnosed neurodivergent women and the founders of fast-growing online community @IAmPayingAttention, HOW NOT TO FIT IN is an handbook-meets-rallying cry.

Foregrounding real experiences with autism and ADHD, this book explores the journey of discovering, accepting and flourishing with your neurodivergent brain. It explores why getting a diagnosis can be so fraught and gendered, and how to navigate a world which centres neurotypical brains in the realms of relationships, careers, friendships and finances.

By reading this book, you’ll:

  • Start to understand why so many people are being diagnosed with ADHD and autism right now
  • Learn the impact that not knowing your own brain can have on your mental health
  • Find the confidence to ask for accommodations and adjustments at work – without apologising
  • Have the chance to note down how this journey is evolving for you in chapter-by-chapter workbook sections.
  • … and, most importantly, get to know yourself and your needs better.

Featuring the latest research and thinking on neurodivergence, contributions from dozens of experts and the real stories of people just like you, this innovative book – which has been written and designed especially for *spicy* brains – is essential listening for anyone whose brain seems to see the world in a different way.

This is such a great book, however it is more than a book, it is a book that can be used as a workbook & self help guide, if needed.
I think it is exceptional resource for a newly diagnosed adult.
As a woman with a late ADHD and autism diagnosis (50 years +), I have found it very helpful to reflect on the content, especially the chapters that relate to;
*To mask or not to mask
*Grief & burnout
*Relationships & sex
*Health, fitness and nutrition and
*Life admin

The authors discuss the point 'it always looked like I was managing before, but I wasn't, I was masking'. This absolutely resonates with me.
They discuss the importance of 'finding your people', with links in pdfs for signposting to recommendations for social media and further support.
I love the fact the authors discuss 'superpowers' and how this term may not always be helpful.

I have read/listened to this book on Audible, it is thoroughly engaging. Highly recommended.

A great resource

I learnt so much about myself however one big thing I would say is maybe don’t hold your breath for the world to change to adapt to your or my needs.
Maybe it will one day after it has adapted to every minority since the world began and possibly always will.
I’d say understand yourself then adapt or die, so to speak.
All that said it’s an excellent read, thank you

How it’s tough

Lots of these books seem to be written from the perspective of people who lean quite far to the left politically, it’s very frustrating when all I want to hear about is the symptoms of Autism and ADHD They spend a lot of time harping on about the evils of capitalism and white heteronormative people. Frustrating.

Tediously political
