“I want to believe, I want to have hope, but....” Pastor and best-selling author Craig Groeschel hears these words often and has asked them himself. We want to know God, feel his presence, and trust that he hears our prayers, but in the midst of great pain, we may wonder if he really cares about us. Even when we have both hope and hurt, sometimes it’s the hurt that shouts the loudest. Can God be good when life is not?

In Hope in the Dark, Groeschel explores the story of the father who brought his demon-possessed son to Jesus, saying, “I believe! Help my unbelief!” In the man’s sincere plea, Jesus heard the tension in the man’s battle-scarred heart. He healed not only the boy but the father, too, driving out the hopelessness that had overtaken him. He can do the same for us today.

As Groeschel shares his pain surrounding the current health challenges of his daughter, he acknowledges the questions we may ask in our own deepest pain: “Where was God when I was being abused?” “Why was my child born with a disability?” “Why did the cancer come back?” “Why are all my friends married and I’m alone?” He invites us to wrestle with such questions as we ask God to honor our faith and heal our unbelief.

In the middle of your profound pain, you long for authentic words of understanding and hope. You long to know that even in overwhelming reality, you can still believe that God is good. Rediscover a faith in the character, power, and presence of God. Even in the questions. Even now.

Reflection questions are available through the audiobook companion PDF download.

An Incredible Must Read! A Very Insightful Picture Regarding Pain and the Presence of God

This is the first time anyone has put into words all of the feelings of my life for these past nine years. I am awestruck. After: debilitating migraines: my teen daughter being diagnosed with leukemia: then my daughter’s diagnosis with necrosis in every major bone of her extremities: after realizing that she now has to spend much of her life in a wheelchair: her chronic pain: my chronic pain: trying to financially pay for all of the medical care: wondering if we’ll ever recover financially and emotionally: with our children now starting to enter college with debt, which I am incredibly against, and it wasn’t the plan: knowing that only God can be our provider: watching Him work: seeing His faithfulness: knowing that healing is not always the plan: trying to help other Christians realize that God has spoken and the pain, at least for now is going to stay: my daughter studying to be a doctor even though her brain doesn’t work as quickly as it used to, she hurts, she works so hard and sometimes it’s through tears, all of this and more. God remains faithful through the circumstances. Everyone should read this book. Christians who want to minister to those who are hurting, in particular need to read the book. People, Christians or not, looking for hope need to read the book. God really gave some amazing insight to our world and possibly to yours through this book. Don’t be fake, wrestle, but embrace. Remember what God’s done in the past. I am so glad these words have been written to help not only my family, but all of those who don’t understand why God would allow such pain without relief.

Hope filled!

So many times we lose hope and wonder where God is in all that is going on. Craig compassionately communicates that we can hope in God regardless of what happens. But he doesn't say that flippantly but as one who has and is living through difficult times. The reader also expresses that very well in the telling of this hopeful book.

A much needed read.

I am at a point in my life where i'm in a valley. This has helped me strengthen my life with the lord. It's not a easy listen, but it will help you if you're struggling.

Appropriate title!

I was truly encouraged by the whole book. Even when trials face us in many areas of life and answers don't come as soon as we'd like we can still trust in God's sovereignty. God is good all the time. He has the big picture and our greater good in mind.

God is good all the time!

I really enjoyed listening to this book. It's based on one of my favourite passages in the Bible. Craig reminds us that God is good and has our best interest at heart at all times, no matter what the circumstances.

Wow

This may be the best book for anyone who has questioned their belief in God, questioned His existence, or had their faith challenged. I’ll definitely be reading this (sorry, listening to this) again. Thank you to Pastor Groeschel for the amazing story! Great narration by Van Tracy!

Deep, meaningful, encouraging, when life gives you lemons book

Just finished this book on Audible all I can say is wow! So many good examples of struggles, people with difficulties in life, choices and how they handle the outcome. This book deals with reality its no 30 minute sitcom with a happy ending for all, as the author explains, its about life, its about hope and making the best of the worst. Understanding sometimes we don’t know best God our Father does. As a long time illness sufferer I found this book helpful I also happen to align my thought process with the author and this book has given me a stronger resolution to cling further to my faith. I strongly recommend it, at the beginning of the book there was a warning about the book being hard to handle for some people, it was at times for me it was sad but nothing I could not listen too.
