Summary
Penguin presents the audiobook edition of Hope by Lesley Pearse, read by Lucy Brownhill.
Her existence would be the ruin of her mother....
Baby Hope, the unfortunate proof of Lady Harvey's adultery, is smuggled out of a privileged aristocratic household to a nearby village. There, her true identity a secret, she grows up in the arms of the poor but loving Renton family.
But the day comes when Hope must pay her way. What could be more natural than being taken into service by the Harveys? However, when she sees something she should not, she is threatened and blackmailed into leaving her beloved Rentons forever.
Destitute on the streets of an unfriendly city, Hope's courage and kindness are recognised by a doctor. A talent for healing sees her taken on as nurse and destined for the horrific battlefields of the Crimea.
But will Hope ever come home and uncover the true story of her birth?

Love conquers all
Conditions during the early to mid 19th century were difficult for the labouring class and dire for the poor. The horrors of the Crimean War are graphically described and yet this is an uplifting tale.

Great story but...
The story itself was fantastic and I looked forward to listening to it each day. However he narrator's irritatingly whispered story telling made it a little less of an easy listen than I usually like. I kept listening for the story isltself, and the different character voices vastly helped with the difficulties in listening.

throughly gripping and enjoyable book
this is the third Lesley Pearse book I have read. the first was never look back which kept me hooked all the way through and remains one of the best books I have ever read. i instantly knew that she was an author I would gladly return to again. I then read the house across the street which sadly didnt have the same effect on me as never look back. I recently decided to download audible out of curiosity and the 3 free months with prime convinced me. so Hope was the first audiobook I have ever listened to. having been an avid reader all my life I wasn't sure if I would enjoy the experience of being read the story. however I really enjoyed everything about it. I will of course continue to read physical books but will listen to an audiobook now and again. the narrator was easy to listen to and I enjoyed her various accents for the characters. the story... well I found it really gripping right from the first chapter. Lesley kept the interest throughout by the way she went back and forth to different characters stories so just as you wanted to know the next bit, the next chapter focused on someone else. the main thing is that the protagonist of Hope was a very relatable character and you really felt connected to her, experiencing all the troubled times she had been through, I was praying it all turned out well for her in the end. the story is of a young girl fighting through the struggles and hardships of life forced upon her because of something she saw, causing her to be apart from the people she loved and having to find her own way in the world. I recommend this book to anyone, if you like Lesley Pearse or if you just love a good story.

Brilliant
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters were so lifelike, the story flowed at a steady pace, around Hope, born in the early 19th century. Not only was Hope's story fascinating, but the way it highlighted the social injustices of early Victorian society and the conditions experienced during the Crimean War for soldiers and the hospitals struggling to cope with the wounded and disease. Highly recommended.

Absolutely adored this book. It captured me from start to end. I’m so sad it came to an end. It would make a great movie. I envy anyone who hasn’t read it yet…enjoy!
