I thought this was a poignant story of a marriage and parenthood, both of which can be down as much as up. It moves between time and character but is easy to follow. Most of the voices are convincing. Overall I thought it was excellent.

I loved this story; how each character has a chance to tell their story from their perspective and then, the main story comes to life but going back and forth, recalling each person’s life and experiences. ‘Home Fires’ is a tale told from what I can only assume, is a more realistic perspective in history; harsh and cruel, but very, very human.

Such a depressing read. I can manage death, grief and abuse generally but in this book I did not root for any of the characters, the women were ugly. I nearly didn’t bother finishing. Too much misery.
