One of our best-loved actresses, Celia Imrie would rather have been a dancer. As a child she planned to join the Royal Ballet and marry Rudolf Nureyev. Now she has become one of our finest and funniest performers, on stage, TV and screen - adored for her roles in 'Acorn Antiques' and 'dinnerladies', as well as films including 'Calendar Girls' and 'Nanny McPhee'. In her hugely entertaining autobiography, Celia Imrie recounts a life hurtling (not always intentionally) into adventures both on stage and off.

'Between the Stops is a sort of a memoir, my sort. It's about a bus trip really, because it's my view from the Number 12 bus (mostly top deck, the seat at the front on the right), a double-decker that plies its way from Dulwich, in South East London, where I was living, to where I sometimes work - at the BBC, in the heart of the capital. It's not a sensible way to write a memoir at all, probably, but it's the way things pop into your head as you travel, so it's my way'.

For a long time, I felt that I couldn't write this book. At first, I didn't think I'd lived enough, then life got busy and filled with distractions. In more recent years, there was always a very painful consideration - I knew where it would eventually have to go. I have recently decided that the truth is the only thing that can set me free. The truth has taken a long time to make itself clear to me, but now is the right time to share it, all of it. Television and broadcasting has been a part of my DNA for as long as I can remember.

Summary
The heroine of Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music tells her life story from the music halls of London to Broadway stardom.
Over the years Julie Andrews has been much interviewed in the press and on television, but she has never before revealed the true story of her childhood and upbringing. In Home she vividly re-creates the years before the movies.
An idyllic early childhood in Surrey was cut short when her parents divorced and her mother remarried. The family moved to London, and there are vivid scenes of life during the Blitz. Her mother went into musical theatre with her stepfather, who encouraged Julie to have singing lessons which led to the discovery that her voice had phenomenal range and strength for someone her age. Before long she was appearing on stage with her parents. She soon realised how much she enjoyed looking out into the black auditorium with the spotlights on her. By the time she was a teenager, she was supporting her whole family with her singing.
A London Palladium pantomime led to a leading role in The Boyfriend on Broadway at 19. Parts in My Fair Lady opposite Rex Harrison and Camelot with Richard Burton soon followed, and there are wonderful anecdotes about the actors and actresses of her day. But this is far more than a collection of show stories (it's not until the final part of the audiobook that Julie gets the call from Disney for Mary Poppins); Home is an honest, touching and revealing memoir of the early life of a true icon.

Wonderful book of a legendary person. Unfortunately the editing of the recording is not perfect (some snippets of recordings repeated or running into each other) but this wasn't enough to warrant knocking off any stars. I couldn't give Julie Andrews any fewer than 5 stars!

marvellous
I loved this book. Julie Andrews is an absolutely delightful to listen to. the story is so very interesting, I have been a fan of Julie's since I was a child and first saw her in Mary Poppins. however there is so much Julie had experienced way before her Mary Poppins days. I would definitely recommend this book to family and friends.
