Summary

Blind since birth, a once-spirited kid with big dreams now finds herself in a locked psychiatric facility - a wounded young woman in the midst of a global pandemic.

This memoir spans decades and continents to tell a story of the beautiful similarities that make us all human. From meeting unlikely allies in the dirty streets of some of Latin America's most impoverished neighbourhoods, to discovering difficult truths about discrimination in her home country of Canada, Heather Hutchison offers poignant insight into mental health awareness and what it means to strive for an ordinary life when you are often treated as anything but ordinary.

At once heartbreakingly honest and strikingly witty, Holding On by Letting Go is the unforgettable true story of one woman's journey through despair to acceptance and hope. Ultimately, it is a portrayal of the light that can be found in the darkest of times.

Emotional, Heartbreaking and Healing

I didn't really know what to expect with this book, so I settled in with a cup, gave it a go and was instantly captivated.

This story took me up to the top of the most stunning mountains, and down to the bottom of the darkest corners of myself.
Heartbreakingly beautiful, she narrates her own story beautifully and authentically.

I would like to give my personal thanks to Heather Hutchison for telling her story, and helping in spreading awareness about depression and the struggle that it is to live with this condition, for both the afflicted and the affected.

Thank you.

Inspired

This is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time.

Read by the author, Holding on by Letting Go, takes you on a journey which does not shy away from the very real emotions life brings in all its highs and lows.

Heather Hutchinson’s story is uncomfortable at times, and that perhaps is a reflection of ourselves, and all that we need to do as a society to better understand and support mental illness, (and illness in general) in a more holistic, compassionate and open way.

This book is both heartbreaking and hilarious- often one right after the other. Heather’s style is captivating, and you can’t help but be swept along on this journey with her. And what a journey.

Anyone who has suffered with mental illness, or knows someone who has, will benefit from the insight and hope this very personal story brings.

A must read for anyone. You won’t fail to be inspired and moved.

Disappointed

I find the sample section made available to be misleading about the content of the book. Admittedly,I liked the sound of it and didn’t read the resume . The book started well but it quickly became cringeworthy (imo) and i am struggling to listen to it.
