Summary
Mendel Singer ist "fromm, gottesfürchtig und gewöhnlich, ein ganz alltäglicher Jude". Doch wie einst den biblischen Hiob gefällt es Gott, ihn zu versuchen. Ein Sohn wird zum Militär eingezogen, der zweite flieht nach Amerika. Die Tochter lässt sich mit Kosaken ein, und der jüngste Sohn ist schwer krank. Und das ist erst der Anfang von Mendel Singers Leiden. Gläubig und ergeben nimmt er Prüfung um Prüfung hin. Doch auch die Demut dieses großen Dulders ist irgendwann erschöpft.
