About this listen

When Mahony returns to Mulderrig, a speck of a place on Ireland's west coast, he brings only his handsome face, a photograph of his long-lost mother and a determination to do battle with the village's lies.

Mahony also somehow wakes the dead from their graves, with their foggy memories and hidden stories floating greyly amongst the unseeing living. No one, though - living or dead - will be able to guess what happened to the teenage mother who abandoned him as a baby.

Critic reviews

"It’s utterly original and deeply enjoyable. It smacks you in the face from the first page and for the rest of the novel strokes your cheek." ( Canongate)

Compelling story narrated with warmth and humour. The magic and fantasy are subsumed in the overwhelming reality of the protagonist's journey. Will listen to this again and again.

Mesmerising

I loved the unique voice of the author and will look for more of her works. I laughed out loud , cringed in horror and was hooked by the intrigue. I highly recommend this novel. The narrator was fantastic and brought the story to life in a way that reading it wouldn’t have achieved.

Absolutely brilliant

It took me a couple of chapters to get into this book, but then I was hooked and in love with all the characters. It's beautifully read by Aiden Kelly. To be honest, he has such a lovely voice, he could be reading the telephone directory, and I'd love listening to him, but fortunately we have a wonderful story of ordinary people, who have ordinary flaws, jealousies and kindnesses with a few ghostly shadows thrown in.

A different kind of murder mystery

This beautifully written story will stay with me for a long time, I'll look forward to listening to it again and again. I had a right good chuckle throughout it too. Aiden Kelly as the reader was MAGNIFICENT, really brought it to life for me. Totally recommend it!!!!!

Absolutely blooming loved it!

This has been the best book I’ve listened to. In parts sad, funny, harrowing and beautiful. A book that draws you in, you have to know what happens but you don’t want it to end. In rhythm and style very reminiscent of Under Milk Wood. It will stay with me.

Wonderful, highly recommended.
