About this listen

We've all heard of fake news, but what about fake history?

Dominic Sandbrook explores two and a half millennia of human history, traveling from the American Deep South to the air raid shelters of wartime Britain, to discover how the past has constantly been manipulated, rewritten and reshaped.

It turns out that when it comes to history, separating fact from fiction isn't always easy. Many of the widely held beliefs about our past are based on a web of lies.

An interesting series, focusing on a variety of topics which exemplify the way history is interpreted and used in a modern context to frame our identity and bolster political ideoplogy. It's pitched and delivered really well, and manages the delicate balance of not assuming any prior knowledge on the part of the audience but also not patronising or dumbing down. I really enjoyed it and learned a bunch of new stuff!
