Summary

Perfect for fans of Daniel Silva and Steve Berry

An authentic Stradivarius violin turns up in Romania. A Stradivarius is rare enough, but this one is even more special. It is thought to hold the code disclosing the location of a treasure hidden in the 15th century. The violin is steeped in haunting mystique: It is believed to have been hidden by Vlad Dracula, whose historic tyranny led to the fabrication of the myth of vampirism. Russian, Chinese, and Romanian gangs centered in Boston want the code and all of them are hot on the trail.

Violence is their language - brutality, their technique. And who is hired to see that the treasure lands in the rightful place? None other than Michael Knight with a little help from his senior law partner Lex Devlin and his crony, Billy Coyne, Boston’s deputy district attorney.

Michael uses the thin leverage of his knowledge about the violin to keep each of the three gang leaders at bay, while he follows the chain of historic clues from a violin shop in the Carpathian Mountains to a gangster-infested nightclub in Bucharest, to a university in Istanbul, and back to the gang headquarters of the three competing criminal organizations. Secrets from the past and present collide along the perilous shuttle between Boston and Romania. In the end, what is the righteous solution?

Riviting

This was a very good book. It kept your attention throughout. The characters were believable and the excitement intense. The narrator was outstanding as I have come to expect. This book was provided free of charge with the expectation of an honest review.

Excellent narration, plot didn't hook me

I was very impressed with Bill Nevitt's narration skills in this audiobook production. He's great with accents and modulating the pitch of his voice to accommodate and match the expression and emotion a particular character is trying to convey. The characters' voices are well differentiated, too. Unfortunately, even Bill's excellent work did not make up for the - at times - bad writing and clumsy expressions. I was also confused by the story, and was not gripped by it the way I have been with the previous instalment of this series.

“I’m a lawyer, we avoid danger like the plague”

Thoroughly enjoyed. Just as good as the last book, if not better! Ok, so I managed to guess a couple of the twists at the end but this didn’t reduce any enjoyment. Bill has just the perfect voice to go with this book, has great pacing and is able to portray the emergency of the situation brilliantly! Really hope there’s more to come! This is my honest opinion of a free review copy.

Trilling dark story

Wow seriously I probably would not have normally picked this audio but as it was narrated by the amazing Bill Nevitt I thought I would give it ago. This book is exciting and scary in equal measure as there are violent forces at work who will stop at nothing to get their hands on a violin with a hidden secret dating back to Vlad Dracula. Whilst Michael Knight tries everything to work out the secret code without getting killed we are taking on a crazy and dangerous journey that does not stop until the very last word.

It's OK

The narrator really spoiled the book. His voice made the story seem cartoonish. The story was ok, and had some interesting twists, although a lot of it was totally unbelievable This book was not for me

Fast-paced action thriller

Michael Knight gets his hands on an ancient violin holding the secret to an ancient treasure. The Russian, Chinese and Romanian gangs are trying to get the violin, and will use any means necessary to get what they want. This story was fast paced and action packed. John does an excellent job building suspense and excitement throughout while building towards an amazing climax. The plot is cleverly developed and keeps the listener intrigued and on the edge of their seat in the life or death situations Michael ends up in. Bill narrates with excellent intonation and accents during the story. He is a passionate and energetic performer and i thoroughly enjoyed listening to him. I highly recommend this brilliant action thriller. Once you start you wont be able to stop! Note: This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this objective review voluntarily.

The Mary-Stu of all Mary-Stu's in a Fast Thriller

*This book was given to me by the author at my request, and I provided this voluntary, unbiased review.* 3/5 This was an interesting read for sure, but the one thing that really bothered me was the narration. The story centers around a Stradivarius violin, which three sets of mobs are after, and the MC and his crew have. While I did enjoy the different settings, plot twists, and characters along the way, this story is utterly not believable in the slightest. This MC is like James Bond and any other slippery - get away clean - never make a mistake guy - combined into one. While I can suspend my beliefs for a good story, this book was way over the top for me. One more thing that bothered me: seeing as the author is from Boston, I find it hard to believe that he would have the MC drive from Brighton through Jamaica Plain, on their way to South Station or the airport. The MC wasn't taking a back-way either, it was a "direct" route. Makes no sense! Small details like this can spoil the fun/authenticity for readers that happen to live in the locale of the story.

Three mobs looking for a lost treasure...:)

This is my first book in the series but you don't need to know the previous ones to enjoy the ride:) It's a really fast paced story of a lawyer who suddenly finds himself in the middle of a hunt for a treasure lost centuries ago... Together with Michael Knight we travel all across Europe and the US, avoid one trap and murder attempt after another, tame not only the Chinese Triad but also the Russian mafia, and all this on the historical background of the true story of Prince Vlad Tepes, better known to wide audiences as Dracula....:) If you had time to stop for a moment, you'd probably find many of the scenes and situations highly improbable - in reality, Michael's quest would probably have ended before it really started - but the plot runs so fast that you just don't have enough time to think about such trivial matters... Better still, the book is so entertaining that you don't WANT to think about them:) Michael as a character is a nice chap - intelligent, honorable, loyal, caring... He's also a somewaht reckless quick-thinker, brilliant in his on the spot solutions to problems that he encounters on the way to the happy ending... I simply really like him and trust the choices he makes... The narration by Mr Nevitt is wonderful; the pace of his reading is just right, the characters are recognizable and their emotions very clear. I also liked the different accents he did (though as I'm not a native speaker of English I can't really say how well done they really are...:)). In a word, a great job:) DISCLAIMER: I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Fast Paced Story with Great Narration

"I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review." I enjoyed listening to this story, and look forward to listening to other books in the series. It was packed with action, and was unique in a way that I found intriguing. Good character development and a clear storyline to follow. Narration was strong, I quite enjoyed the accents.

Treasure

Wow. I have missed a bunch of the books before this one (I know I’ve listened to at least one of them) but I didn’t feel like I was missing anything listening to this book. Back stories were explained enough to understand. I really enjoyed this book. I found the twists and turns exciting. Never really guessing what was coming next (which to me makes a good book - it’s not as interesting if it’s all predictable). I’d recommend this series.

Great plot but narration was a little off

Plot The plot was exciting and fast paced with lots of unexpected twists . At first, I thought the plot was moving too fast, but as things went on I realized it was just the precursor to a much larger story. Narration The range for the characters was pretty good considering that the majority of other characters are either Russian or Chinese with heavy accents. However, my biggest issue was that the voice for the MC is lacking seriousness. Despite there being a high amount of quick paced dramatic scenes, they’re all performed in the in the same calm tone as the narrator. This made the characters tone not match up well with what he was expressing and made him come across as too calm during times of distress. One of my other issues with the book was that the MC’s wife was hardly given any lines and any interaction between the MC and wife was glossed over. Their interaction isn’t important to the plot of the book, but because a large part of the MC’s motivation in the book is to keep her safe I felt that interaction between the two of them have been an easy point to interject emotions for the MC and make you feel better connected to his goals. This combined with the lack of emotion from the MC left me feeling like the narration was just a bit off for most of the story. Recommendation All that begin said, Bill Nevitt was still a good fit for the voice of the MC, and did a great job with all the other characters and narration of the book. However, he could have done a better job giving the MC some more emotion. I would recommend this book for anyone who enjoys mysteries and thrillers. Adventure in chaos

Told in the first person, this story works. It is very centered on the brilliance of the main character and his use of truth telling double talk and cunning to make it all work out. While a bit trite and predictable I didn’t have the urge to give up on it. The narrator was a bit of an odd choice. Didn’t K.T. really fit the character and had strange emphasis in many places.

Interesting what motivates some men.

This is a story of long lost treasure, men that will do anything for greed and a small minority of people, trying to do the right thing, for themselves, their neighbors and the world at large. It gives us armchair voyeuristics a look into a world of corruption and coercion, of brutality and thuggery, as well as a world where some strive to do right, even when the odds appears stacked against them. I applaud the narrator's grasp of languages, as well as different characters vocalizations, which adds that extra dimension to the story.
