About this listen

Appearing in 1854, Hide and Seek was Wilkie Collins’s third published novel. At the centre of the plot is the mystery surrounding a deaf and dumb girl known as Madonna, whom the painter Valentine Blyth rescues from her life as a circus performer. But it is only when Blyth’s friend Zack Thorpe rebels against his disciplinarian father and falls into bad company that the secret of Madonna is revealed.

Combining charm and excitement, Hide and Seek is presented in two halves: the first is leisurely and discursive while the second picks up the pace, foreshadowing Collins’s later sensational fiction.

Hide and Seek is persuasively delivered by Nicholas Boulton, who has read several of Collins’s novels, including No Name, Armadale, The Dead Secret, and Man and Wife.

It looks like Naxos is recording the complete novels of Wilkie Collins. I certainly hope so if the reader is Nicholas Boulton whose characterisations are a pure delight!

More Collins please

Loved this book. I was hooked from the get go...absolutely superb narration.
I laughed out loud many times...and shed a sentimental tear or two also. All you potential readers have a treat in store. Nicholas Boulton brings this tale to glorious life.

Triple stars for the narrator.

Loved this! Firstly the narration was excellent which can make or break a story. But the story was delightful, fun, silly and full of twists and turns. I thoroughly enjoyed it

Wonderful Wilkie Collins

A Rogues Life by Wilkie Collins resembles this story in a shared protagonist or at least you can recognise the free spirit and rebellious nature of the artist in both Valentine and Zach. I especially enjoyed the details describing the life of an artist in Victorian London. The adventure amd mystery of the story is enjoyable too. The reader gets the tone right and the many voices of the characters he acts out brilliantly. All in all an intriguing listen/read .

An Artist, an orphan, and a rebellious youth

This is the third Wilkie Collins novel I have listened to and I have enjoyed them all.

As with the other two, there is a slowish build-up and laying out of the background leading on to an interesting storyline with some twists and turns along the way.

The narrator is one of the best I have heard on Audible and I have been a member for several years. His range of voices and accents is superb. If I could, I would give the narration an extra star.

Good Story Excellently Narated
