Story
Jack Lancaster, consultant to the FBI, has always been drawn to the coldest of cold cases, the kind that law enforcement either considers unsolvable or else has chalked up to accidents or suicides. As a survivor of a fire, he finds himself uniquely compelled by arson cases. But the more cases Jack solves, the closer he slips into the darkness. His only solace is Winter Meadows, a meditation therapist. After particularly grisly cases, Winter can lead Jack back to peace. But as long as Quinton Zane is alive, Jack will not be at peace for long.

JAK at the top of her game, narration ruins it.
I have heard another narrator read this book and I loved it. This narrator makes a smart young woman, strong enough to overcome an unconventional if loving childhood and education to become very successful in the broader world, sound apologetic and childlike. Like the very best of JAK's heroines this young woman is not only unapologetic that she is different but is so cheerfully centered that she feels the rest of the world needs a bit of adjustment. In most cases she is right.
This story was written when Jayne Ann Krentz was at the top of her game. The main character is a bright young woman who was adopted at birth by a whole village. It may not have taken a village to rear her, but she is lucky in the village she has. Each villager taught her their own special subject and her education allowed her to be very successful at University and later when she returned to her home, she is successful in her own specialty grocery. When the book opens she is negotiating with a start-up consultant to begin an online outlet for the crafts and art the people in her village create.
As I said the earlier recording of this book is better. I am sorry I lost that one and I am sorrier that I bought this one.

What a waste! Extremely poor narration...
First let me say that I absolutely LOVE this story. I own in both in print and ebook versions. I was hoping to add this version to my stockpile. I've been a little disappointed by the narration in a few of the recent JAK audiobook offerings (ex Guinevere Jones series) but I took a risk. This is a story with very rich characters and I could tell from the sample and the first 30 mins that the narrator wasn't going to cut it. Her voice had potential but the delivery was so FLAT that I couldn't listen any longer. It is literally one step above voice read text. I'm so disappointed that this one didnt work out.

Dated
I enjoy Jayne Ann Krentz and I was excited for a new book. After listening to the first chapter I realized that this was a new audio version of an old book. It hasn't aged that well. Some characters are quite hateful but then one has an unrealistic change of heart. A major plot point is the development of a mail order catalog business. There is an unnecessary subplot about an abused woman and her ex. Overall, I wish I'd realized this was a book from 1993 and saved my credit.

Wonderful story
A fan of Jayne Ann Krenz for years, and still love all of her books. This one was a true delight. We each carry "bits and pieces" of each person we encounter in life with us.
Truly enjoyed this story. Highly recommend this author and her other books such as the paranormal series by Jayne Castle. And not to forget her mystery romances by Amanda Quick. Love them all. Still waiting for the next book by Jayne Castle. Can't wait for it to be released.

Mountain Town evolves
Romance gets a faltering start, due to a businessman's faulty family management skills. Lucky for him, the residents of a tiny mountain town did a great job of raising a mysterious girl left in their care. She knows how to handle whatever life throws into the entrepreneur's path - blackmail, scheming relatives, murder, and the looming threat of invasion.

I loved this book. I love a.ll JAM books for that matter. I truly enjoyed the way that this book was read aloud. That is so much more difficult than it seems but it was really well done and went well with the book. I had already read the book and loved it so I doubly enjoyed listening to it.
