Summary

Never look back. Alex Verus is a diviner who can see probable futures - a talent that's gotten him and his friends out of many a tough scrape. But what happens when someone doesn't want Alex's help?

Alex's friend, the life mage Anne, distanced herself from him when she found out about his past as a Dark apprentice. Now she's in serious trouble but wants nothing to do with him. Alex has to start wondering if Anne's problem is really with him - or if there's a secret she's trying to hide. On top of that, rumours are swirling around London that Alex's former master may be back in town. Alex has no idea what his agenda may be or who it involves....

Series starts off as good and ends up great.

I've done a couple of reviews for books in this series recently and have said nearly everything there is to say without giving away spoilers. The plot was great, the narration keeps improving and I was pulled in from start to finish. Despite the fact that the main hero is male, there are several really strong and varied females in the cast, which makes this an equally good listen regardless if you are male or female. This review is really just to confirm that it keeps getting better and there isn't a weak or filler book in it so far. I ended up listening to the books back to back, despite the fact that I've other purchases I should be listening to first. The next book is due in August and I will definitely be pre-ordering this if it come to Audible UK.

You do need to listen in order as while each book has it's own story there are new characters introduced and an overarching plot. Since Audible now has the lot but hasn't series linked them yet, this is: Fated, Cursed, Taken, Chosen and Hidden.

When hints become facts

What did you like most about Hidden?

Quite a few facts about characters that have been only hinted at in previous novels get an explanation. And the explanations are as riveting as the action scenes!

What did you like best about this story?

Although the story is globally very well thought out, it's the small details that flesh it out that I like the most.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

A certain allusion to the Babylon 5 universe... Funny as hell!

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

As always, the story builds up in a way that enables the reader to empathize more and more with the characters.

Any additional comments?

The whole series has become 'mature'. The characters are well rounded and very human (i.e. flawed), except maybe for a certain reddish animal.

The best in the series so far!

Really enjoyed this book - the characters developed and there was much new. I was so into, I immediately read the next book
in the series, Veiled, but it rather disappointed me. Not enough to stop me from reading more in this excellent series.

I've been reading the Harry Dresden books which as is much mentioned in reviews this series is similar to - for me Jacka writes with more flair and better characterisation. In particular I enjoy that London is such a strong backdrop.

Another great story in the series.

Alex Verus and friends become more compelling as the series proceeds. His survival in the dangerous world of magic comes at a price.

like where it's going - but starting to get samey

love the story and the characters but there are some annoyances creeping in. Repeat explanations of Alex's processes and the politics; some obvious reveals and repeating names when the pronoun would do really jar when listening to an audio book.

Narration is good - but accents are poor and getting poorer :(

like where it's going - but feels like a campaign in an RPG....

A good read

Another good story with the same disfunctional family/group of friends. Fast paced, if a little cheesy.

jacka knows how to make you care about every character new and old, and also makes you wonder what is in store for each of them

Another great part to the series

I have thoroughly enjoyed this series and already stated the next one.
A bit imaginative, or is it.
Either way you get absorbed and enjoy the story.
Very good narration.

magic and conflict

Love this series. the narrator is good and makes the characters come alive. however he sounds older than the character of Virus is supposed to be.

I will listen to the whole series .
