About this listen

When a very personal cold case murder is reopened, a detective’s secrets come to light in a novel of shocking twists and suspense by a Wall Street Journal bestselling author.

Thirteen years ago, Assemblyman Derrick Bell was murdered in his home by an intruder. His wife, Noelle Marshall, was left for dead. The crime was unsolved, but it wasn’t forgotten.

Today the FBI is tackling a fresh perspective on the case and looking to Noelle, now a detective for the Deschutes County sheriff’s office, for new clues. It is reopening everything Noelle thought was behind her. Memories of her escape from a traumatic childhood. A marriage that wasn’t the perfect love story she’d been promised. And a husband whose charm and privilege hid a dark side. But Noelle has been hiding something too: a secret about the night Derrick died that she has never told anyone.

As past and present and leads and misleads collide, one thing is frighteningly clear. Derrick’s murder wasn’t just unsolved. It’s unfinished. And only the truth—no matter the risk—can save the next victim.

Critic reviews

“This will satisfy…”Publishers Weekly

“As in any good thriller, the narration, the dialogue and the action draw us deeper and deeper into the life of the main character.”—Bookreporter

“Cold cases inevitably provide great fodder for crime thrillers, and Kendra Elliot proves remarkably adept at mining that trope with her latest sizzler of a story, Her First Mistake.”—Jon Land, BookTrib

Wahoooo! It’s the start of a new series, but with a ton of characters we’ve already met! Noelle Marshall is a detective with a secret past that catches up with her.

Oh, this book had me guessing and guessing the whole way through. Stephanie does a fantastic job solo narrating. This is the first of her books that I’ve listened to, and she brought the goods.

The pace of this story is spot on; it was unpredictable and unputdownable!

And we have a little love interest too. This is not a book with steam, but it doesn’t matter. Elliot can do no wrong in my eyes. I will always read her stories; they are nothing short of phenomenal.

If you love thrillers, get into her books. You won’t regret it!

A cracking start to a new series.

Liked the characters and the plot and the flow of the book. The performance was very well done and enhanced my enjoyment

Great plot

A haunting return to her husband's unsolved murder, Detective Noelle Marshall finds herself brought into questioning once again by the FBI who are determined to uncover the secrets and shadows that surround this thirteen year old case. The biggest shadows are in Noelle's mind, she still has blank spots, stretches of time she can't remember...until she can. The not remembering was so much better, she didn't have to face the fear or the betrayal when she couldn't remember.
We met Noelle in a previous Kendra Elliot book when she saves her partner Evan and numerous other people, but at that point none of us (or Evan) knew she had such a dark past - or that it would come back to haunt her quite so dramatically!
I really like Noelle, she is smart, inquisitive and stronger than she ever thought she could be. She has rebuilt herself after suffering a brutal crime and loss, and is very successful. She still has moments of self doubt, especially when her memory/time loss issue once again appears to be increasing in frequency. A twisted tale of betrayal and deception, this investigation leads us down a path nobody ever imagined was there and presents us with heartbreaking results that have you asking..."Wait. WHAT?"
Because everybody missed it....
....even the FBI.
I loved seeing the sparks between Noelle and Max and I hope there will be many more books in this series with the two of them. I also enjoyed the crossover with Mercy too.
I downloaded this on Kindle Unlimited which allowed me to listen on Audible.

Betrayal or protection?

Once again this offer delivers a fascinating intriguing and compelling story. We knew some of the characters from previous books that were introduced to some new ones. I almost couldn’t see where this was going right until the end it was brilliantly thought out and kept my attention from the first page to the last. The audible narration was excellent. I can’t wait for the next book.
