Summary

Rory is waiting at the door of the preschool - a painted picture of his mother, Susan, in his small hand. But Susan isn’t going to see the picture, because she has vanished.

Susan Wheeler is a devoted mother. She would do anything for her three children. She drops them off and picks them up every single day. Until one day when Susan kisses them goodbye and then never comes to pick them up.

Susan’s mother, Mary, is worried. Susan is recently divorced and has been finding things hard recently, but she loves her kids - she’d never leave them.

Susan’s sister, Clare, is furious. It’s just like her to go missing. It’s not the first time, either. Susan has always been a troublemaker. Always seeking attention. She knows Susan has been lying to the family for years. And she knows that Susan has been sneaking out of her family home for weeks....

As the hours turn into days, even Clare becomes fearful for Susan. And, when Mary discovers Susan’s diary, she begins to uncover a dark secret from her childhood. Something no one in the family knew. When the final diary entry leads the police to a man who is discovered dead in a local park, they’re left wondering whether Susan has vanished because she is a victim. Or because she is a suspect....

An explosively compelling crime thriller from best-selling author Carla Kovach - if you love Lisa Gardner, Robert Bryndza, or Clare Mackintosh, you’ll love Her Dark Heart.

Disappointing

For me I found the constant harping back to Gina’s mother irritating. It wasn’t the best- but each to their own.

Great series of books!

I love this series of books, but I felt this storyline was a little harder to follow as there were so many characters. Overall, still very good!

Loved it, bring on the next

I have listened to all of the Gina stories and love them. I was nearly put off this book when one of the reviews said about her keep referring to her Mom but I'm so very glad I listened as I found it very relevant and emotional. Grief takes many forms and sometimes triggers can make you look back and think of things you could have done differently. I can't wait to see how her relationship develops too. Next book here I come! x

Oh Dear.

I've loved all the other books in this series, but I was very disappointed with this one.
First of all I want to say, how let down I was by the narrator, she made Wire sound like a wailing banshee on helium, and the over the top Birmingham accent was grating. Please can we have the original narrator back.
Now, the story I found a little boring. I wasn't keen on all this harping back to her mother , and her husband's death.
Her and her non-affair with Briggs, is getting a little irritating to the point I don't care anymore.
Very disappointing. I've just looked, and the same narrator is being used on the next audio book, to put up with this narrator again, all I can say is the story line had better be a lot better than the previous one.

another excellent read from Carla

loved the story clever complicated (but not comfusing) plot .
I am so so glad that DI Hart has stopped the intense self flaggilation .it was driving me nuts and spoiling the story to the point I wasn't going to read any more .
personally that bloody Sadistic bastard Terry needed pushing down the stairs ..sooner than he was .All praise to Gina !
look forward to next story ...minus Terry and Gina's guilt .

Nothing gripping about this story

After the first couple of chapters I found the story uninteresting and long drawn out, eventually skipping much of it to its anticlimactic ending.

Too Many maudlin recriminations!

I have enjoyed Carla’s previous books, but found this one very annoying, am over halfway through and not sure if I want to prolong the agony! Gina is constantly, as she has in previous books, referring back to memories of her dead husband and mother even drawing parallels between the mother of the missing woman and her own mother, so much so that she is constantly distracted from the case. I found all these reflections extremely irritating and just seemed to be unnecessarily padding out the story. I have now been fast forwarding through chapters to get through the boring bits. Don’t like the narration either.

Changed narrator

After 4 books with the same narrator they changed it for this book and it pretty much ruined it for me. The voice is everything in an audio book.

Good suspense

This one has the basic story line she used in all 5 books. They were all great to listen and was glad she finally dealt with her own grief. It was getting redundant. I would recommend all the books in the correct order. I will listen again in the future.

Wow. Sucked into the story right away and hard to put down!!

I have loved this series so much. This next book in the series didn’t disappoint. The characters are relatable. And Alison Campbell is and amazing narrator, who brought them to life. I’m so glad there are other books left to the series and I can’t wait to see how they progress.

Different narrator

I hate that they switched narrators. I love both narrators, but it’s not the same when you’ve heard one narrator for several books in the same series, and suddenly everyone sounds different and the intonation is different.
