About this listen

A snowstorm. A country house. Old friends reunited.

It's going to be murder...

Torben Helle - art historian, Danish ex-pat and owner of several excellent Scandinavian jumpers - finds himself dragged to a remote snowbound Northumbrian mansion for a ten-year reunion with old university friends. At the dinner table their host, a reclusive and irritating tech entrepreneur, makes some shocking revelations. And when these are followed by an apparent suicide, the group faces a test of their wits...and their trust.

Snowed in and cut off, surrounded by enigmatic housekeepers and off-duty police inspectors, not to mention a peculiar last will and testament, suspicion and sarcasm quickly turn to panic. Kept afloat by strong drink and stronger women, Torben must draw upon the skills of his training and all the tricks of Golden Age detectives past. As the temperature drops and the tension mounts, it is up to him to work out how much money it would take to turn one of his old friends into a murderer - before someone else ends up dead.

This witty murder mystery puts a modern spin on the classic country house whodunnit. A must-listen for fans of Agatha Christie, Richard Osman and Janice Hallett.

Tremendously plotted and brilliantly written. And, brilliantly read too. A Danish man playing detective in Northumberland… What could be better?

Who the heck dunnit???!!!

I read a lot of crime fiction in my spare time and most of it is mindless rubbish that I enjoy as a guilty pleasure. This book though was fast-paced, engaging and felt literary. No guilt - all pleasure.

The actor who voices the parts here is incredible - all accents and pronunciation were pitch perfect.

Original and captivating murder mystery

It had good reviews and was in the sale so I took a chance, bought it and looked forward to listening whilst doing chores. Although there are some moments of interest, most of the characters are shallow and annoying with the main protagonist prone to long bouts of introspection that make you want to hit the skip button. The plot is unbelievable and the pacing is all over the place with brief moments of action followed by lots of exposition that does not serve to further the story. The narrator does well with the material but fails to make each character individual which can lead to confusion over who is who. This is one I am going to delete.
