This is a sweet second chance romance focusing on Dee and Rico reconnecting after Rico left to enlist leaving his childhood sweetheart Dee broken hearted. The sparks are still there and although Rico's circumstances have changed he never stopped loving Dee and wants her back. Dee on the other hand has closed herself off from that type of love after being hurt and isn't ready to welcome Rico back with open arms.

Its a fairly quick listen but packs a lot in; there is no OW drama which was a nice surprise as Matteo's mother is out there somewhere and instead its medical drama which pushes the plot along. The medical scenes were written very well and I liked how nerdy Dee got with some of the details! There are also some pretty heavy sub plots concerning more than one parent; these are only briefly touched on and I'd have loved to have that developed a bit more as it was such an important part of Dee and Rico's pasts. Similarly, I'd have loved a flashback to when they were younger just for some more context. There is no real grovel either; this is just two people who are meant to be together finding their way back to each other.

This was my first Christina Berry audio and the narrators were both great; the chemistry was perfect in both the spicy scenes with the leads but also in their more emotional scenes with Rico's mum and Matteo. Maxine Mitchell is always good and I liked how she brought out the conflict Dee was going through in both her vulnerable and snarky moments. Gregory Salinas's Rico had a very quiet determination about him as although he knows what he wants, he was willing to wait as long as it took with no pressure.

The found family was a definite highlight though and I cannot wait to see more of Rooster; I'll be picking up book one too after that epilogue!

The duet narration was EVERYTHING. Every conversation felt real, every emotional moment hit harder, and every bit of banter had me kicking my feet. The narrators didn't just tell Rico and Dee's story, they became Rico and Dee. I was completely immersed from start to finish.
Rico had me melting into a puddle. A devoted dad, carrying years of heartbreak, still hopelessly tangled up in the woman he never truly got over? Sir, please. Dee was equally amazing, strong, compassionate, stubborn in all the best ways, and absolutely deserving of the love she fought so hard for.
The emotional payoff in this story was worth every ounce of heartache. Christina Berry took my emotions, shook them up like a snow globe, and then somehow put me back together by the end.
If you love second-chance romance, childhood sweethearts, emotional healing, single-dad heroes, and audiobooks with phenomenal duet narration, stop what you're doing and listen to Hearts to Mend immediately.
Now excuse me while I stare at a wall and think about Rico and Dee for the next three to five business days

Christina Berry pens another fabulous novel set in her “Hearts of Texas” series, an enthralling small-town, second chance, romance that sweeps you right in, and not only captivates your attention the entire time but tugs at your heartstrings too. I love how Berry keeps her characters intriguing and real, making them easy to relate to, root for, and even fall for. Rico Rodriguez left town seven years ago, joined the army, and wanted to see the world. He also left her, Dee his best friend and first love, behind, which broke her heart. And she learns he is back home, and was probably the last one to know, also learns he had a son, Mateo, another hit to her heart. Mateo, aka Matty, was a cutie, and he and Dee hit it off while she was treating him for an injury, did not treat him any differently when she found out who his father was. She was not very welcoming to Rico, and did not hold back her anger towards him, but he knew she had every right to be upset, but he thought he was doing the right thing back then, and has his regrets. He never stopped loving her and will not give up on her, hoping to win her heart back again. Dee is feisty and full of personality, and I enjoyed watching them getting reacquainted despite her resistance. Her quick thinking saved his life, and it was great seeing her and her fellow rescuers in action. There is never a dull moment in this book, and the multi-layered story has the perfect balance of drama, angst, heartwarming moments, heartfelt emotions, and a steamy romance. Once again, the writing, plot, and world-building are fantastic, as are the character growth and development. Speaking of characters, besides the wonderful main characters, there are some fabulous secondary/side characters too, and it was great to see Drew and Chloe from the first book in that amazing epilogue.

🎧📚🎧 And for the fabulous audiobook listen and production performed in duet by the wonderfully talented Maxine Mitchell and Gregory Salinas with a special appearance by Joe Arden for an epilogue to remember. I loved how they took each role and made it their own, sounding believable and just as I imagined the characters to sound. Mitchell nailed it as Dee, grasping every facet of her personality: fierce, witty, and bodacious. Salinas was just as fabulous as Rico, showcasing his personality perfectly and was a natural in the role. Arden jumps in for the epilogue, doing an incredible job at leaving you wanting more. They were fantastic at performing the roles of the side/secondary characters too, young and old. Their expressive delivery conveys all the character’s emotions, making you feel them all. These versatile voice artists are entertaining storytellers, and their captivating performances keep you glued to the story.
