About this listen

SHORTLISTED FOR THE IRISH BOOK AWARDS 2025

'Fascinating - a great read' - Miriam O'Callaghan

'Brilliant, absolutely terrific' - Matt Cooper

With a foreword by Richie Sadlier

From the heartbreak of losing his mother to breast cancer at just 12 years old, to battling mental health struggles throughout his teens, Andrew Porter's journey is one of extraordinary resilience. In this deeply personal and inspiring account, the Irish rugby star opens up about the challenges that shaped him - on and off the pitch.

With honesty and heart, Andrew shares how rugby became his lifeline, guiding him from the gym floor to the world stage. He reflects on the emotional highs and lows of his career, including earning 75 caps for Ireland, winning three Six Nations titles and becoming one of the sport's most respected figures. This is more than a story of athletic triumph - it's a testament to the power of perseverance, vulnerability, and the human spirit.©2025 Andrew Porter (P)2025 Bonnier Books UK

This confirmed what we already know, Porter is a champion. Great listen and honestly delivered. Narating it himself turned it into story telling as opposed to just reading. My only complaint is that it's on the short side but I'd expect it's only as he's mid career and will add to it when he retires as a centurion.

Andrew reading the book himself made it even more worth listening to.
Hearing his raw true stories on life really does show a different side to him and my respect for him has grown even more.

A great listen.

Raw and impactful

The story is an Ernest one but it is solely focused on loss and mental health. Those are honorable subjects but it would have been nice to get a greater understanding of what it is like to be in the Irish team for the last number of years. A little more spilling of the beans would have been welcome too.

I would have liked if the book was longer, this would have made it 5 star for me.
