Summary

When the music impresario Bryan Morrison died at the age of 66 in 2008, after two years in a coma following a polo accident, he left behind his unpublished memoir. As a music publisher, manager, and agent, Morrison had represented the Pretty Things, Pink Floyd, T. Rex, The Jam, Wham!, and many others. He was also the founder and owner of the Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club.

In this candid and outspoken audiobook, Morrison reveals the true stories behind why Syd Barrett of Pink Floyd once bit his finger to the bone, the Pretty Things were banned for life from New Zealand, and he became involved with the Kray Twins. He also discusses how The Jam kissed goodbye to success in the US, receiving death threats when Robin Gibb left the Bee Gees, and signing a publishing deal with George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley as Wham!

Spanning the golden age of rock ’n’ roll from the 1960s to the 1980s, this is the extraordinary story of a cigar-chomping entrepreneur, with a passion for art and design, fashion, music, and polo.

Superb! A rip-roaring listen. What a life!

When I bought this book I did not read the background to it too closely and given the title "Have A Cigar" is an iconic track on Pink Floyd's iconic "Wish You Were Here" album I thought the book would have more focus on Pink Floyd - however that is a relatively short part of the story.

Initially disappointed, I quickly found on that this was an phenomenal story about a fascinating man who had an incredible life.

One other small thing - when the book starts it states there are two narrators - my heart sank as a wondered if one narrator had give up and another had taken over - in fact, the second narrator provides superb "additional colour" and fact-checking on the stories which really adds something to the book.

I enjoyed it immensely and would highly recommend it to others.

Bit of a character

Not as much about Pink Floyd as I’d have liked. Morrison’s a bit of a character, entrepreneur, social climber, name-dropper. Seems like an honest account - he owns up to a lot of his mistakes, but glosses over many more. The narrator frequently mispronounces words, and I wonder if that was deliberate.
