Summary

“My heart demands I be near this broken man. Maybe we can be broken together.”

Alex: The only thing I’ve ever wanted was to be left alone in my secluded cabin, deep in the woods. I wear my scars as a badge of dishonor to ensure that people will stay away from me. And severe PTSD after years in the Navy just about seals the deal.

And this is how I like it: alone and quiet…Until a beautiful trouble gets dumped on my doorstep.

Freya: The only thing I want is to fix my car and get the hell away from Little Hope, where I got stuck thanks to a popped tire and ‘helpful’ locals. Unfortunately, fate - apparently - has other plans for me.

That’s how I find myself at Alex’s doorstep. A local ex-navy recluse, Alex is rude, obnoxious, and scorching as hell with his grumpiness and f-off attitude.

I just want to run from this little town and from this growly man people constantly warn me about. But why does he suddenly feel like home?

They say All Roads Lead to Maine. But do they end there?

This slow-burn, strangers-to-enemies-to-lovers, contemporary romance is a standalone filled with angst, battling the demons of the past, and finding peace. Each book contains a story about a different couple. No cheating. No cliffhangers.

HEA.

TW: PTSD, anger issues, mentioning of abusive relationships (for FMH in the past, not from MMC). Strong language and adult situations.

Great story that deals with some important issues.

Soon after I started listening, I heard that the author had written some Supernatural references into the story and I knew I would love it.
Haunted Hearts is a love story at it's core. The thing that makes it different from a lot of other books is how it deals with so many complex issues ranging from PTSD to Domestic Violence. These sensitive topics are dealt with beautifully, and with the appropriate amounts of tension and awareness. I'm so glad to have come across Haunted Hearts because I am familiar with some of it's themes and issues, and it was very impactful to me to listen to a book that deals with multiple mental health conditions without minimising them or judging those characters that experience them.
The voice actors did a fantastic job of bringing their subjects to life and were both lovely to listen to. Especially Axel, who sounded to me like the perfect Alex and who has a voice that is made for storytelling. 💚

A good starter!

This is a good starting point as a debut novel, but the author has to work on her plotlines.

It started off really well with Freya on the run from a psycho ex, running into vehicle trouble in the middle of nowhere. Here she meets Alex, ex Navy and PTSD sufferer.

I liked meeting all the side characters but unfortunately the story fell flat midway with unanswered questions, e.g. it would have been interesting to know more about the FBI,  Jake and why he went off the rails; and why there was such hatred between Kalya and Justin.

I got tired of selfish Freya and all the troubles she caused, which she had, always centred around how she was feeling and she couldn't care less about everyone else.

There could have been so much more to the story including the PTSD and the domestic abuse angles. These are major problems in our society and how they are dealt with medically could have been very informative. Unfortunately the story just went out on a whimper with too many loose ends. Shame!

The narration was good and Axel was an excellent growly Alex. It's a pity his name isn't mentioned either on Audible or Amazon and this should be fixed.
