About this listen

It was an irrational decision. Despite having just moved into a beautiful new house, the Williams family gave in to an odd, overwhelming desire to purchase and move into a Victorian home they had come upon by chance. They were curious, of course, as to why the house had, in the past, such a high vacancy rate - no one ever seemed to live in it for a long period of time. But that curiosity didn't last long, because shortly after moving in, strange things began to happen. It became abundantly clear that the home's past owners all had a reason for leaving: fear. The Williams' new home was haunted. At first, the family tried telling themselves there were logical explanations for the strange things they all were witnessing. But before long they came to accept the fact that they were sharing their home with ghosts. Haunted is the Williams family's story from the point of view of the mother, Dorah. Through her chilling reminiscences, we witness the all-too-real goings-on in the house. And we join the family as they seek a way to bring an end to the paranormal events that were occurring with ever more frequency and intensity, and learn why the events began in the first place.

Editor reviews

Dorah Williams’ real-life ghost story begins like so many others: A young family moves into a historic mansion, its untold history and baroque trappings portending supernatural secrets. Nevertheless, this is no fiction, nor is it cliché: The Williams matriarch’s memoirs aren’t so much terrifying as bewildering, vaguely eerie. At times Williams’ ghosts are playful, almost childlike, and they don’t necessarily forebode a horrific ending for the house’s inhabitants. An uncanny experience nonetheless, Haunted receives a suitably spooky send-up from established documentarian Katina Kalin, who captures the warmth, wonderment, and worry of this vigilant mother. Kalin cuts through whatever incredulity might belie Haunted, and lends authenticity - even a sense of familiarity - to the Williams family’s plight, so that listeners will empathize with their paranormal predicament.

I didn't get along with the narration, it also goes really odd at times which is borderline creepy considering the book subject. the narrator also does accents that are not her own horribly, and her child's voice is like nails on a chalk board.
the story is ok but drags a lot and is rarely interesting, it felt a lot of the time that I was just listening to get to the end

a bit of a struggle

This is no sensationalist horror story but a recount of a family living in a haunted house. As such I enjoyed it. The reason I gave four stars for the performance is because clearly there were some issues requiring changes and so suddenly what appears to be a much deeper woman's voice takes up the narrative to be replaced with the much brighter voice of Katina Kalin a moment later. Is this still Katina with a voice transplant, I doubt, but I found it rather off-putting

Enjoyable story, no great shocks

Pretty good and enjoyable, not ‘scary’ as such, but interesting enough. Some of it is nonsense though, such as the stuff the kids allegedly said, which do not sound like things any kid ever says.

There’s some issue with the narrator. Occasionally a deeper voice takes over for a sentence or two. Bizarre.

Narration goes weird in places

I have my doubts this story really is one that actually happened. However, the story is good! I like how she tells the story and even thinks to change pitch for voices. I seen people in reviews complain she sounds like she is telling the story to a child, but I like that as just reading text without pitch etc would just be boring to listen to. The narrator makes me enjoy the book. Again a lot of stuff in it makes me doubt it's a real experience, but it makes for a great read/listen if you stop worrying about that and just enjoy the story. I did notice that the voice drastically changed a few times (not for doing voices but sounded like a whole other person was narrating, not even pitch change) which I didn't like much and I took a star for that but I really enjoyed the main narrator!

Great story but I'm sceptical about it being real.

There aren’t many books about real haunting as far as I can see so this was pretty good as fair that goes. The story was alright, pretty generic and repetitive in places. The most annoying thing was the narrators children voices….. very irritating.

It was ok
