About this listen

A satire at the expense of the establishment, but as Harry Lampeter says, "If you can’t take a joke, you shouldn’t have joined."

Two years after he blew up the Channel Tunnel to foil the Franco-German invasion, Harry Lampeter returns to England, hoping for employment with MI6. The political climate in Europe has changed. The Roman Catholic Church, led by mad Pope Benedict XVII, is attempting to fill the power vacuum in Europe by reviving the Holy Roman Empire, with himself as Emperor. The CIA has other ideas, as do the leaders of the European nations.

Harry discovers that his half-sister, Emma, and her daughter are being held at the Mary Magdalen Hospital for Penitent Women and sets out to release them. Meanwhile, Ms R returns in a new guise, burning with anger and seeking revenge on her former boss, Brigadier Crisp, the head of MI6.

I loved this book. even though it is book 4 you can still listen to it without knowing the previous books. It follows Harry after the channel tunnel has been blown up by him and is set in a futuristic alternative universe where everything is back to the Victorian era styleoin regards to travel and electricity. It follows Harry as he returns from America and is looking for something to do, but most of the story actually follows Ms R and Harry pretty much takes a back seat in her story. I loved the narration and story was very well written. I can highly recommend this and the previous books

brilliant continuation of the story

I think perhaps this is the darkest and most labyrinthine of the Harry Lampeter books, I'm sure some might even call it 'satire '. All the usual characters are here brought to life by Craig Bowles' narration. There are twists and turns in Harry's story that cast him in a different light. However it is fans of Ms. M who will enjoy this most and her story is as twisted as a left handed corkscrew. I shall say no more except that the book concluded with enough loose ends satisfyingly tied, but with enough left untied to provide for a return in the future should Roger Ley be kind to us.

I never saw that coming.

I so enjoy listening to the Harry Lampeter stories, and I looked forward to listening to this one when it became available in audio format. It didn't disappoint; it's a great addition to the series. I do enjoy Roger Ley's writing style; it's smooth-flowing and easy to follow. This story is an enjoyable one and takes a humorous look at the politics of both the Catholic and Anglican churches. I'm not religious at all, but did wonder, what would happen if the Catholic Church used information it learned in the confessional for its own gain?

This is the fourth book in this enjoyable steampunk series, but don't worry if you have missed the earlier books, as this book works well and can be enjoyed as a stand-alone. The narration by Craig Bowles is perfect as always.

Great Addition To The Series

This is a pleasant and humorous return to the low tech world of the previous Harry Lampeter books, with a compelling and unexpected story that explores the potential for organised religion to be exploited as a vehicle for personal power, espionage and national politics.

The latter is engagingly contrasted with the more mundane lives and concerns of Lampeter and friends.

The narrator, Craig Bowles, who evidently enjoyed reading the text, has also excelled himself with the provision of a wide range of appropriate voices and accents, which further enhance Roger Ley's talent for the depiction of characters at all levels.

A Superb Addition to the Harry Lampeter Series
