Happily, Ever by Nia Forrester is a short story that delivers emotional depth and dramatic tension in a compact package. Our main characters, Rumi and her husband Micah, find themselves facing the cracks in their marriage after learning about a close couple’s impending divorce. What follows is a cascade of revelations—secrets, betrayal, and emotional pain—that forces them to confront some hard truths about each other and their relationship.
Without giving too much away, one moment that stood out was Rumi discovering Micah’s past with someone very close to her—cue the classic “with friends like these…” reaction. That revelation felt like a real gut punch, and Rumi’s sense of betrayal came through loud and clear.
To be honest, I found their relationship dynamic a bit dysfunctional. Their way of handling conflict—often linking sex to arguments—didn’t sit right with me. It felt emotionally unhealthy and didn’t add the depth I was hoping for. That said, everyone’s interpretation of intimacy and conflict is different, and others might view those scenes differently.
Narrator India Williams absolutely delivered. Her voice is soothing, expressive, and carried the emotional tone of the story well. She made the characters come alive and enhanced the listening experience overall.
While this was a short story, it piqued my interest in reading more from Nia Forrester. The writing was engaging, the spice was perfectly balanced—not too much, but definitely enough—and the ending was one of my favorite parts. It brought everything full circle with a real sense of closure. For Rumi and Micah to have a chance at a true “happily ever,” they needed to shut the door on their past—and the story honored that.
This was a strong, emotionally charged listen, and I’m glad I gave it a try. Looking forward to exploring more from this author!
