Summary

The tiny Swedish island of Sandhamn has always been a haven for lawyer Nora Linde. With trouble brewing in her marriage, she finds its comforts more welcome than ever, even in the depths of winter. That is, until her two young sons trip across a severed arm in the woods.

The boys' gruesome discovery will once again connect Nora with her childhood friend Thomas Andreasson, now a local police detective. When the limb is identified as belonging to a twenty-year-old woman who disappeared without a trace months earlier, what had been a missing persons case takes on a whole new urgency.

Nora and Thomas delve deeply into the woman's final hours, each of them wrestling not only with the case but with the private demons it awakens in them. As they do, they'll find themselves drawn into the history of Sandhamn and the tensions that have been simmering just below the surface for more than a hundred years.

Not for me

Personally I hated the historical account of the boy being systematically abused by his father. Painful to read. Enjoyed the first few books much more. Will continue to read the series though.

Series Bogs Down

On the up side the narrator has really improved from the choppy robotic quality of the earlier books. Dawe is even able to do different voices for the characters now. This make it much better for listening. On the other hand I think I'm giving up on this series. It has become too plodding and on the edge of tedious for me. I hated all the graphic child abuse depicted in the flashback chapters. Then if you add in the odd and abrupt cliffhanger ending the whole thing just lost me.

Norah weeps

A long, boring tale with wimps as the “heroes.” Wish that Thomas and Nora would grow a pair.

This one ends in a cliffhanger!

I prefer not to listen to a serialized series (one where the all of the novels except the final one end in cliffhanger situations) until all of the series has been published. The Sandhamn Murders series was not serialized until the third novel, Guiltless, ended with a major unresolved issue. I look forward to the next Sandhamn Murder book.

This series should be read in order written in part because the first chapters of Book 2 completely gives away the plot of Book 1.

Guiltless is the best book in the series to date; it earns five stars. Narration is still by Angela Dawe. Maybe I've become accustomed to her; he narration is excellent.

Good Story Line....But....

Like this author very much. Story was engaging but when it came to the finish line of pulling it all together it fell flat.

Depressing

I read book #2 in this series and enjoyed it. I like mysteries and have a Swedish ancestry so perfect, right? Well, stick with book 2 and skip this one unless you need to read a very sad and depressing book. I don't listen to books to be depressed. Ill try #4 because it's free right now. Wish I never heard this one.

Sandhamn with a historical twist.

I don't want anyone to be put off by my review because this isn't a bad book in the slightest, but compared to her best, it's not as enjoyable. It's the usual strong, believable characters and interesting stories between them, and that sells me Viveca Sten books every time. I must be honest though - this is not my favourite of the series. I'm a bit conflicted about this one. There's a big chunk of the story dedicated to a storyline in the 1920's and though I enjoyed the modern mystery more, I felt the historical story was much better from a storytelling POV. The past is thoroughly fleshed out but I wasn't that impressed once the connection is revealed to the present. It felt a bit flimsy, almost like so much effort was put into making the past section strong that the modern story suffered. I felt a disconnect between the motives of the killer versus the past storyline that was supposed to have caused it. While I love Nora and am very impressed with her as a strong, sympathetic character, I am getting concerned by the way she keeps ending up in the middle of police investigations that shouldn't involve her. It's starting to smack of convenience and I am uncomfortably reminded of Murder, She Wrote. As always, kudos to the reader who does such an impressive array of voices - she really makes these books for me. I find it very easy to start the next book in the series because I know the quality I'll be getting with her. I'm very impressed by her male voices, she has an incredible talent for voices, male or female. This is not my favourite - as strong as the past story was, it wasn't exactly enjoyable and doesn't have a remotely happy ending, so it's a bit rough going sometimes. I also found the resolution of the modern murder thin and because of the heavy emphasis on the past sections, there were pretty strong hints about what the connection would turn out to be, which takes a lot of the surprise out of who the killer is - you might not know who it is, but you can take a guess in the ballpark. Despite all of the above, I will continue to read every Viveca Sten book because while the story might not always live up to the best books, the result is always strong writing and characters, and you know what you're getting going in. I find her books incredibly easy to pick up and continue with for this exact reason and oddly, even if I don't enjoy the murder mystery as much, I love the characters and their stories, and that will always make me recommend Sten highly.

Great Book Series! Narrator does an excellent job!

This is not a one and done book, like the rest in the series the author draws you into the lives of the characters in the novel & leaves you wanting more! Excellent work!

Perfect for a rainy day.

Really good storyline. I had to change my mind about the identity of the murderer more than once.
