About this listen

Grog is a brute (half Human, half Ukar) slave raised from birth to fight in the pits for the entertainment of the crowds. He is content with his role in the city, proud of his barracks, and in awe of his owner, the sour Master Horne. Life, by Grog's reckoning, is good. Then an enigmatic churchwoman enters his life, and Grog finds himself swept from the city which has been his entire world, to travel and learn amid as strange a group as he has ever seen. He knows nothing of the group's mission, just that his skills are necessary and the quest is "a good thing." But slowly, on this strange journey of both distance and spirit, Grog learns of the goal his new employer pursues, and its role in a troubled world. More importantly, he learns the value, and price, of freedom, and neither aspect is anything like what he imagined.

A fast-paced fantasy novel by the author of the popular Dream series (and 18 other novels), Grog takes the listener on a journey through an embattled Empire and a world in which things are seldom as simple as one expects.

Grog is a wonderful atypical hero, who in another story might have been a minor character associated with a villain. I really want to see how he develops.

I loved Grog’s character

I liked the story and from "not" the main character, I felt like the same story could have been told separately by all the main characters and it would have been a different tale each time. Well done look forward to more of your work.

a story from a good view point

I enjoyed this book, it is clever, entertaining with a strong story line. I’m disappointed that there isn’t a sequel on Audible, but the book does have a sufficiently satisfying ending to off-set the few dangled threads that lead into a continuing story line. Grog is an interesting, self-effacing hero with a simplistic outlook that fits his background. His education centred on obedience, speaking clearly, having a clear sense of purpose and winning fights, he didn’t need anything else, so he wasn’t taught it. It is easy to see the difference between the innocence of ignorance and the term stupid. It is clear that Grog believes that not knowing the basics taught to most free people means he must be as stupid as he has been told he is but, as the book progresses, the speed he learns new information, his ability to apply that new knowledge and his ability to reason things out and survive show him to be far from stupid. Plus, he is a completely moral, ethical being who kills ruthlessly, without question, simply because it’s required of him.

Clever book

I absolutely loved this book but disappointed that audible does not have the full series as I would have purchased them immediately.
I would highly recommend all fantasy fans to give this a read.
