Summary
In this, perhaps Dickens' most profound and personal novel, we are invited to share in the sentimental education of Pip, the poor boy from the village forge who risks losing himself in snobbery and selfishness when he mysteriously inherits a fortune. The story moves from the bleak Kentish marshes of Pip's childhood to a thrilling climax that mingles tragedy and triumph.

Dickens brought to life.
The last time I encountered Dickens was at school (some 40 odd years ago) when our English teacher read Oliver Twist to us and made it come alive. In order to relive this experience I downloaded Great Expectations and was not disappointed. Anton Lesser is an inspired choice as narrator...along with Dickens descriptive talent he made this a magical experience and I want to move on to more of the same.

Best Reading Ever
Where does Great Expectations rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Definitely in my top five.
What about Anton Lesser’s performance did you like?
The beginning where Magwitch leaps out at Pip - he yells.
Any additional comments?
For anyone who wants to start on Dickens, I recommend you choose this book. It's a sudden beginning and you've just got to read until you reach the end. You feel for Pip right the way through, especially in his love for Estella.
Since writing the above, I now listen to my Audible books through Alexa and whilst I was listening to this narration I noticed that Pip mentions the Hubbles being surpassively conceited and vainglorious at his sister's funeral. I didn't know what the word vainglorious meant, so I asked Alexa and I found it meant feeling self-important. It's just great to have a dictionary I can call on now at times when I'm unsure what a certain term means whilst listening to a classic with old English language in it.

Dickens and Lesser are a Perfect Combination
Where does Great Expectations rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Equal top with other Dickens/Lesser collaborations and some Virginia Woolf / Juliet Stevenson works.
Which character – as performed by Anton Lesser – was your favourite?
Wemmick, or rather the home and story of Wemmick and the Aged P, is a wonderfully endearing construct.

Excellent
A classic Dickens' novel; the narration by Mr Lesser is especially good (as are all his narrations) with a very good range of voices for the different characters. Highly recommended.

Excellent in every way
It would be difficult to over-enthuse about this reading of such a wonderful novel . Dickens at his best and narrated so very well . I shall look out for Anton Lesser’s narrations again. We enjoyed this so much and were deftly drawn into the characters by Mr Lesser’s masterful interpretation . Unreservedly recommended

Superb interpretation and performance of a veritable classic.
Dickens was renowned for his readings of his works and his dialogues are at the heart of the stories.
I honestly believe that Anton Lesser’s wonderful performance raises the written word to a higher level. The average reader’s eyes move too fast to enjoy the conversations and subtleties of description.
Dickens is the neatest weaver of story lines; there’s never a loose end.
I enjoyed this audiobook immensely and can recommend without reservation. Wot larx!

Beautifully read a special book
Not having read this book for many years I recently watched a BBC adaptation with a great cast that I thought strayed so far from the book with its artistic license that maybe my memory was going, so I decided to remind myself of the real thing and it was very close to my memory of it and nothing like the far fetched BBC adaptation which was good in itself but should not have been called ‘Great Expectations’ this book is so beautiful, you can read it every few years and never get bored of it, the reading was lovely and a perfect fit,

Timeless classic.
Anton Lesser's narration was absolutely superb! His range of voices, male and female is very wide.
It is hard to imagine they all come from him!
