Arthur Conan Doyle was the greatest genre writer Britain has ever produced. Throughout a long writing career, he drew on his own medical background, his travels, and his increasing interest in spiritualism and the occult to produce a spectacular array of Gothic tales. I knew of one of these stories but had no idea the others existed! really engaging throughout

I loved the reading of this book. The narrator added life to the characters with a whole host of accents. Great job. The stories themselves are suitably dark and menacing, like Poe or Lovecraft. Some of the tales have not dated well, but putting that aside, these are a great set of short stories to listen to before sleeping....if you manage to sleep.

This is an extremely variable collection of short stories. Some of them are utterly awful, most are very middle-of-the-road. But there are some absolute gems. The Terror of the Blue John Gap, The lift, The New Catacomb, The Striped Chest, Lot No. 249, and John Barrington Cowles are all well worth reading.
