The Pregnancy Guide For Perfectly Imperfect Dads-To-Be

Written by a first-time father doing his best to navigate pregnancy in real time, Good Dad’s Guide To Pregnancy pairs practical advice with sharply observed, laugh-out-loud stories—using comedy not just to entertain, but to make important lessons stick.

She’s evolving by the hour—hormonally, emotionally, gravitationally. And whether he knows it or not, he’s changing too! Perhaps not in a swollen-ankles-and-sudden-aversion-to-the-smell-of-tuna-fish kind of way, but major psychological shifts are occurring. This book is here to walk dads-to-be through those shifts. Not with perfect answers, but with honest ones. Not with the formality of a medical textbook, but with empathy, humor, and the kind of meaningful perspective that only comes from being in the trenches and living to tell the tale.

Imperfection isn’t a flaw here; it’s standard equipment.

Welcome to the club, dad!

—Eric Mendes, parenting blogger at Dad Mode Engaged

—Dr. Rebecca Patel, OB-GYN and mom of three

“It felt like my future self wrote the book and mailed it back to advise me.”
—Marcus Avery, brand-new dad of twins

“Like a slap on the back from a guy who’s seen battle and lived to diaper another day.”
—Jason Rudd, host of The Rookie Dad Podcast

I really enjoyed this audiobook because it felt honest and easy to relate to. The stories about learning through uncertainty made me laugh while sharing practical lessons. I finished feeling more confident about supporting a growing family. I also appreciated how humor made serious moments easier to understand. I would happily recommend it to other first-time fathers.

The writing has a nice lopsided rhythm: a quick joke, a blunt observation, then a bit of advice that sneaks up on you. I liked that it sounds like someone telling the truth about the odd, unglamorous parts of getting ready for a baby, rather than trying to make dadhood look tidy. A few lines are deliberately goofy, but that’s part of the charm. It kept the advice from turning into homework.

If your browser history is already full of pregnancy questions you’re slightly embarrassed to ask, this one’s for you. It understands the eager-to-help dad who also has no idea what he’s doing, and gives him a few ways to get out of his own head. I liked that the advice comes wrapped in specific, messy stories rather than a checklist pretending everyone’s pregnancy goes the same way. It’s an easy companion for the person who wants to prepare, but could use a reminder that being imperfect doesn’t disqualify him from being a good dad.

The idea that dads are changing too, even without the obvious physical signs, stayed with me. It gave the whole audiobook a more generous view of first-time fatherhood, especially the uncertainty that men often keep to themselves. I liked that the narrator could be genuinely funny one moment and thoughtful the next without making either side feel forced.
