About this listen

Lina Ragelis prides herself on her bravery and strength, two traits that have served her well in her career in the US Army. Having been disconnected from her family since she turned eighteen, Lina has learned to rely solely on herself—and her slightly overbearing best friend—and she swears she prefers it that way.

It's an easy lie for someone who has spent her entire life dodging love. Lina's pretty certain that she's damaged goods. But the truth is, she's the kind of person everyone wants in their corner, and the kind of woman many women want to love.

Having had more than her fair share of challenges and hardships, there isn't much that scares Lina. Life would be so much easier if she were afraid of something basic—like spiders—instead of something significant. Something like real, true, healthy love.

Really loved listening to this book. The author managed to draw me into a world I really knew nothing about, and did it with a tenderness to the subject of PTSD and dissociation that I found empathy with. The narrator did the story so much justice, loved her voice, and being able to distinguish between characters is always a bonus. The story follows different timelines, but it’s easy to follow as the chapter headline indicates it.
I highly recommend this book if you value a good story, well told and narrated, with a believable plot.

Loved it

I had not come across author Kat Jackson or narrator Lila Winters before and I am super impressed with both of them. Yes, PTSD is a tough subject but the novel ends on a positive note and I enjoy books that feel real and tell me about something I don't already know. I also appreciate books that are well written with a depth to the characters and the story, so I found Kat Jackson's writing skills and psychological insights seriously impressive. This is an impressiveky meaningful book and I'm sure I will listen to it again and I will definitely look out for more books from this author.

Near perfection

I’m torn on this one. I know very little about PTSD but do understand how disorienting it can be. It dominated this story and rightly so because it consumed Lena’s life until she met Reagan, but the jumping back and forth between past loves and the present day got me confused at times. Still beautifully written but it didn’t grab me in the way ‘The Roads We Left Behind Us’ did, which is probably simply down to personal taste. Kat Jackson is very much an author to look out for.

Difficult listen

Good story and it's free, from the plus catalogue ! The story at times is quite difficult to listen to, the trauma and loss that is described is sad ! PTSD is a thing and this audiobook delves into it's murky depths. The narration is good and as with all good narration lifts the audiobook !
