Summary
What do you do when God is silent? Writing out of the pain of his wife's fight for life, but also the wonder of watching the prayer movement they founded touch many lives, Pete Greig wrestles with the dark side of prayer and emerges with a hard-won message of hope, comfort, and profound biblical insight for all who suffer in silence.
Pete Greig, the acclaimed author of Red Moon Rising, has written his most intensely personal and honest account yet in God on Mute, a book born out of his wife Sammy's fight for her life and diagnosis of a debilitating brain tumor. Greig asks the timeless questions of what it means to suffer and to pray and to suffer through the silence because your prayers seem unanswered. This silence, Greig relates, is the hardest thing. The world collapses. Then all goes quiet. Words can't explain, don't fit, won't work. People avoid you and don't know what to say. So you turn to him and you pray. You need him more than ever before. But somehow...even God himself seems on mute. In this heart-searching, honest, and deeply profound book, Pete Greig looks at the hard side of prayer, how to respond when there seem to be no answers, and how to cope with those who seek to interpret our experience for us. Here is a story of faith, hope, and love beyond all understanding.

When God seems silent...
Having lived with an incurable but thankfully slow growing cancer for several years now, I know intimately the reality of not yet answered prayer. God on mute as a book has helped me to process the grief and anger that I have experienced and helped me to deepen my walk with God. My faith is more grounded in reality than ever and the hope I have is expressed beautifully by Pete in this audio book.
Listening to Pete read his own words on the subject adds another layer to his work, his authentic and painful walk with the God he loves comes alive in this testimony to what it really means to live by faith.

Straight from the heart and is beautifully told
The best book I have ever read (heard) which deals with the subject of suffering and seemingly unanswered prayers. A must read.

Challenging but encouraging
Pete Greig’s voice is very easy to listen to which is half the battle with an audiobook. I’m not sure I agree with all his doctrine and theology and therefore his conclusions but it certainly gave me something to chew on. I would definitely recommend.

Challenging and rough
The beauty of the wild and dark unexplored corners of the soul are destinations in this journey that some are familiar with and most of us know are there. The author leads us to the place where we can begin to understand that our Creator has reached out to us in ways that enabled us to be fully known and understood even when our deepest and most painful cries for help are seemingly unheard and unanswered. I have been to some of these destinations and some of them thankfully not yet. Psalm 23 reverberates in this book as does the book of Job. Choosing the framework of the Passion of our Lord is a worthy Bridge between the mysteries of God and God's revealed truth in Christ.
Now I finished this book I realise the first part of my review only captured a glimpse of the beauty to be found in these pages. I too am so glad Jesus found me when I was lost! Thank you Pete for sharing with us all.

Such a seminal book on prayer
Pete Greggs books are always thought provoking and full of hope. Unanswered prayer can be tough and you can ask were is God in this? If there is a God, why does he let bad things happen? This is a great book that compassionately deals with these questions. It includes the testimonies of holocaust survivors and is good for both Christians and Jews alike. Many rabbi’s have also lent their testimonies of prayer. Brilliant.
