Summary

From the bestselling authors of The Good Widow comes a chilling novel of psychological suspense that will make you think twice about what your best friend may be hiding…

For estranged friends Ashley, Natalie, and Lauren, it’s time to heal the old wounds between them. Where better to repair those severed ties than on a girls’ getaway to the beautiful paradise of Tulum, Mexico? But even after they’re reunited, no one is being completely honest about the past or the secrets they’re hiding. When Ashley disappears on their girls’ night out, Natalie and Lauren have to try to piece together their hazy memories to figure out what could have happened to her, while also reconciling their feelings of guilt over their last moments together.

Was Ashley with the man she’d met only days before? Did she pack up and leave? Was she kidnapped? Or worse - could Natalie or Lauren have snapped under the weight of her own lies?

As the clock ticks, hour by hour, Natalie and Lauren’s search rushes headlong into growing suspicion and dread. Maybe their secrets run deeper and more dangerous than one of them is willing - or too afraid - to admit.

it really wasnt my kind of thing. A bit Gung-ho.

Sorry, I have liked works by the author before, but found his lead characters in this work distractingly gung-ho and more akin to the expectations of an Enid Blyton adventure for young adults. the narrator was quite good, though.

Great listening

Enjoyed this from the beginning. The characters came to life with the intricates of friendships and partnerships. Didn't expect the end. Worth a listen.

Friends? Really?

I'm not sure about this one. They seemed to spend all their time together yelling at each other over past issues which couldn't be changed, or getting angry while not telling the truth. It's very easy to regret once one of them disappears. I don't like what Ashley did, it was a girl's holiday, allegedly, but it didn't seem like it. I didn't particularly like Lauren's "problem" with Ashley, I thought it was incredibly harsh and unfair. I really enjoyed the book, but not the story, if that makes sense? Performance was really well done, the story line certainly teaches valuable lessons. Ashley didn't help her cause while supposedly trying to get them all together again, but the other 2 didn't either, in my opinion. I'm not sure what to make of Lauren's adiction, either. I was desperately sad at the end, I actually cried! My sympathy entirely with Ashley, most of the way through if I'm honest, but certainly at the end. Angry with both Lauren and Natalie for different reasons. A really sad book that tells us one thing. Life is short.

Should have stayed in...

Good idea... poor execution, the story drags on and on and on...
Characters are annoying. Ashley is a selfish bitch, Natalie a whinge, and Lauren one dimensional.
Narration is so melodramatic it's funny.
So bad... I switched off two chapters before the end as I couldn't stand any more.
Buy if you don't value your time.

Waste of time.

Silly story with a crappy ending. I read some good reviews for this book but I don't get it.

Cannot recommend...

Hearing three petty, unlikable women bicker through an entire book made it difficult to have any compassion for the difficulties they were facing in their relationships or business. The mystery part was not really suspenseful. I read/listened with Kindle Unlimited. If I had used a credit I would return the book.

narrator does crying voice too much but great book

I loved the story. The narrator makes the characters sound like they're whining or crying too much.

Simply horrible

There is no mystery. No twist. Although you are led to believe there is so you keep reading. Ending was flat.

Lukewarm mystery at best ...

The set up was intriguing, but the actual story just didn't deliver. The characters are a trio of self-absorbed women who are horrible friends to each other. I wouldn't wish any of these women on my worst enemy... ok, maybe I might. The authors use a jumbled timeline for the book so each chapter jumps to a different point in the events. Honestly, I think the reason this was done was to make a dragging story feel more like a suspenseful thriller. Just a generic mystery novel. No real substance here (just like the characters actually).

My Review

This book was very slow to me in the first few chapters. I was getting ready to put it down, but about the 5th chapter it started to get a little better. Was not the best read for me, sorry can't give it more than 3 stars

The boring angst of privileged women

At a certain point I kept listening to this book in appalled fascination, wondering if three women could be even more self-absorbed as the flimsy story progressed. They did not disappoint. The narrator should be commended for two things: first coming up with a separate, whiney voice for each woman and second for actually finishing the narration. Whatever she was paid, it wasn’t enough. Reading it would have been less painful because I could’ve skimmed the repetitive bouts of petty self justification.
