Summary

Lambda Literary Award Winner!

“Pen is an inspiration to anyone who’s struggled to be understood, and a vital addition to the growing world of genderqueer protagonists.” (New York Times Book Review

All Pen wants is to be the kind of girl she's always been. So why does everyone have a problem with it?

They think the way she looks and acts means she's trying to be a boy - that she should quit trying to be something she's not. If she dresses like a girl and does what her folks want, it will show respect. If she takes orders and does what her friend, Colby, wants, it will show her loyalty.

But respect and loyalty, Pen discovers, are empty words. Old-world parents, disintegrating friendships, and strong feelings for other girls drive Pen to see the truth - that in order to be who she truly wants to be, she'll have to man up.

I loved everything about it

I loved everything about this book. It's such an honest look at teenage life with the added bonus of the lead character being a butch lesbian. It covers really serious topics and also the struggles that can come with identifying 'differently.' Pen's growth through the book is a joy to watch, the flirting and relationship sections are just perfect, the evolution of her friendships and the adjustment of her moral compass are so interesting. I cannot praise this book highly enough & I wish it had been released when I was a teenager.

Wonderful gift for butch girls

This book gives voice to all females who celebrate being female and celebrate being butch. A perfect coming of age story for girls like us. An honouring of those of us who don't comply with gender roles. I love both the struggle and the self awareness of the shero. Thank you for not making this another YA Novell about Trans experience, what a blessing this girl has at least one adult to sees her and appreciates the unique version of femaleness, a version that doesn't need to become male to be ok.

I loved this book

If you could sum up Girl Mans Up in three words, what would they be?

Strong Girl Survives

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I loved this book. This is not a book about a transgender girl. This is a story of a queer girl, who doesn't fit the mold of a typical girl. She doesn't want to necessarily be a girl or a boy. She just wants to be herself and have others accept her as herself. Of course, this doesn't happen. Pen instead loses friends, gains new ones, gets bullied and beat. However, as her trials continue, she grows into herself to become the woman she wants to be.

I enjoyed this book so much for the plot. The author did not use any of the typical memes for gender related books. Her plot was unique and interesting. I never knew where the plot was going; although, it remained realistic to high school life. This book I will listen to again. Pen rocks!
