Summary

'Men see women in two separate categories. There are the women they sleep with, and the women they fall in love with. And they will treat you differently based on that.'

From the day they first meet as teenagers, Fern and Jessica are best friends. Despite their differences, they are there for each other throughout everything, navigating the difficulties of growing up and fitting in. That is until Jessica crosses a line that Fern can't forgive.

But now, more than 10 years later, Jessica has unexpectedly reappeared in Fern's life.

A lot has changed for them both—but can their relationship be different now they are older? Is it possible for either of them to rewrite the role that they have been cast in? Or will their shared history ultimately be doomed to repeat itself again?

Set between the present day and the past, Girl Friends is a blisteringly funny and devastating novel: both a joyful celebration of female friendship and a razor-sharp look at the damage we can all cause to those we claim to love the most.

This book is soul healing!

Can’t put into words how much I loved this book. It is such a beautiful, complex story about female friendship told with such honesty and tenderness. If you’re a woman who grew up in the noughties you must read this! Countless times I felt like my own teen years were literally being relayed, the details are uncanny and Holly Bourne paints a picture of the culture and the ways it harmed women with such skill and wisdom. It was honestly so cathartic to hear this story being told, I wept!

okay

an easy listen. enjoyed the themes about female friendship now and then, was relatable and made me think, and the way insecurity morphed perspective was interesting. but didn't find it particularly well-written, and the dialogue was painfully unnatural. i know you don't have to like main characters, and i do often like an umlikable protagonist, but i found adult fern relentlessly whiney and difficult to empathise with. and all the rubbish about being obsessed with being proposed to and being "chosen" without her having any kind of reflection on her beliefs and growth... boring. fine, but could have been much better

Fine but lost me towards the end

Starts off with some interesting themes but after a while just feels a little juvenile and monotonous.

A book that resonates

Wow, this book really made me think as a woman, the themes depicted felt so relevant and so much of it was familiar. Mental health, teenage and adult relationships with men, a complicated female friendship. There is so much of this book that bravely presents some of the darker experiences of growing up as a young woman. Drink, drugs, sex, it’s all there. I wanted to cry and laugh with these characters and this book has left a place in my heart.

Also, brilliantly narrated, making this book even more special.

Thought provoking and honest

I found this book tough to listen to but found it so intriguing that I continued to listen to it despite some of the themes being a little close to home. I am the same age as the characters in the book (late 30s) and related to so much of the content, it made me realise how crazy things were ‘back then’.
Very thoughtful, beautifully written book about friendship, relationships, mental health and life in general. Perfectly observed. Loved the narration too. Would recommend to people…but there are some big themes in the story that are warned about at the outset.

What a book!

This book was amazing. it was both heartbreaking and warming and as a women in my late 20s the story was very relatable. Thanks for putting into words what it's like to grow up as a women. Would 100% reccomend but be prepared for tears and reflection at the end.

Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant!

A heartfelt exploration of female friendship, feminism and mental health. A must read!

I am a huge Holly Bourne fan, of her adult and teen books, and this may just be my favourite book of hers to date.

I resonated with this book so much

So many parts of this book brought back memories from school. The way she describes her feelings and reactions to things I loved and totally resonated with

Absolutely amazing

This book is utterly fabulous. I was well read and the voice was really easy to get along with but the story I have no words to describe how amazing I found it. I related to it a lot throughout and think this is a must read for any women who has ever felt not good enough in one way or another. My new favourite book.

Brilliant and thought provoking

I love Holly Bourne as an author and this didn’t disappoint, thought provoking, brilliantly characterised and completely reminiscent of the time.
