Summary

A terrifying supernatural audiobook that explores ghosts, grief, and god complexes

Ever since their on-again, off-again college romance, Erin hasn’t been able to set a single boundary with charismatic but reckless Silas, who has been chasing the next big high since graduation. When he texts her to spring him out of rehab, she knows enough is enough. She is ready to start a career, make new friends, and meet a great guy—even if that means cutting Silas off. But when Silas turns up dead from an overdose, Erin’s world falls apart.

When Erin learns that Silas discovered a drug that allowed him to see the dead, she doesn’t believe it’s real but agrees to a pill-popping “séance” to ease her guilt and pain. When she steps back into the real world, she starts to see ghosts everywhere from her Southern hometown’s bloody and brutal past. Are the effects pharmacological or something more sinister? And will Erin be able to shut the Pandora’s box of horrors she has opened?

With propulsive momentum, bone-chilling scares, and dark meditations on the weight of history, this Southern horror will make you think twice about opening doors to the unknown.

Enticing narrative

This amazing novel had me gripped from the very beginning, a testament to a talented author. Sometimes harrowing, sometimes emotional, I was gripped until the last word. Excellent work by the narrator had me feeling the entire story and joining her on her journey.

Did Not Finish

Started well but found it repetitive. Didn’t finish, although read almost all of it. Not sure I would recommend.

Mushroomed into a cracking yarn!

Unusual take on mushrooms, composting and addiction but fast paced and kept me listening to the end.

What a rush!

The story is well told from the perspective Erin our protagonist, and for most of the book it's pretty fast paced.

It's ultimately a tale of love, grief and addiction cleverly wrapped up in the supernatural.

Narration was spot on, if it wasn't for the narrator I don't think I would have enjoyed the book as much as I did.

Definitely worth a listen.

Too much of itself…

This book is primarily about getting lost in addiction, with dreamlike sequences and lots of the-protagonist-acts-crazy moments. The ghosts are almost sidelined. The plot gets muddy and becomes a bit of a slog. The characters are almost universally unlikable, including the protagonist. But I wanted to see how it ended, and the audiobook performance was impeccable. So, it gripped me as much as I wanted to quit it. You could almost say the story mimics it’s subject matter that way, but perhaps just a little too much.

Wanna get haunted?

I went into this story totally blank and was pleasently surprised. The setting is very grim and the story pulled me right in. I love that it's not a straightforward ghoststory, it keeps the reader on their toes

I’m afraid of this rating

Ok let me be honest, I don’t ever want audible to recommend me a book based on this book, so I considered giving it a no star rating. But that would be unfair, this is an excellent book, great story delving into the realms of horror, haunting and addiction in a profound way. But it has unnerved me to my very core that the only reason I finished it was because I needed to know the ending. But I desperately wanted to not hear any more. This was a great book, a story that wound its way into my head and a great performance! And I never ever want to hear it again. With all respect to the author 🙌🏻

Great premise, but pretty boring

Really slow start, then it became quite interesting. Unfortunately, this didn’t last. I wish I hadn’t held on until the end, because I’m disappointed. I wouldn’t bother with this one, unless you’re trying to fall asleep.
