A fresh, honest, and darkly funny debut collection about family, friends and lovers and the flaws that make us most human. One woman takes a job selling sex toys in San Francisco rather than embark on the law career she pursued only for the sake of her father. Another realises she much prefers the company of her pit bull - and herself - to the neurotic foreign fling who won't decamp from her apartment.

This is a story about me, about how I got to be me, and about the people who helped mold me into Makayla Carlie. People said I was a hero. How could I be a hero when I never got a choice? Nobody asked me. I did what I hope anyone listening to this would do. While one life was taken too soon, another needed to live, really live. She needed to be the center of somebody's universe. I was that universe. Just like the pea under the mattress, I felt her.

They think the way she looks and acts means she's trying to be a boy - that she should quit trying to be something she's not. Story
Sixteen-year-old Elena Mendoza is the product of a virgin birth. This can be scientifically explained (it's called parthenogenesis), but what can't be explained is how Elena is able to heal Freddie, the girl she's had a crush on for years, from a gunshot wound in a Starbucks parking lot. Or why the boy who shot Freddie, David Combs, disappeared from the same parking lot minutes later after getting sucked up into the clouds. What also can't be explained are the talking girl on the front of a tampon box, or the reasons that David Combs shot Freddie in the first place.

Story
Five minutes after walking through the door, I hated the sexy Greydon West. I wondered why he’d ever had kids in the first place. The broody, single father of two didn’t know the meaning of the word fun. The only things my regimented, hot-tempered boss seemed to care about were his ridiculous spreadsheets. But for some reason, his prickly, stiff-mannered disposition made me curious about what was hidden beneath that exterior. Then, one day I stumbled upon the key that unlocked the mystery of Dr. West.
Summary
Anna Bloom is depressed - so depressed that her parents have committed her to a mental hospital with a bunch of other messed-up teens. Here, she meets a roommate with a secret (and a plastic baby), a doctor who focuses way too much on her weight, and a cute, shy boy who just might like her.
But wait! Being trapped in a loony bin isn’t supposed to be about making friends, losing weight, and having a crush, is it? In her fiction debut, Julie Halpern finds humor in the unlikeliest of places, and presents a character whose voice - and heart - will resonate with all of us who have ever felt just a little bit crazy.

it was dull, the main character lacked any type of real intrigue or depth. really quote a bad/simplistic portrayal of mental illness.

Wonderful!
I looked at the title of this book and was hesitant. I gave it a try by listening to the sample and was hooked. Now my kids are listening to it and really enjoying the story. Every time we are in the car and get home - they don't want to leave the car because they are listening to the story. Quite a bit heavy on the swearing - but my kids pointed out - she is not really saying them since it is a book and it was only written down.
