About this listen

Discover the remarkable life of George Rogers Clark...

George Rogers Clark was an American general during the Revolutionary War—the epic conflict in which the newly formed United States of America broke free from British rule. A seasoned frontiersman, he became a leading figure in the expansion of the American frontier into what was then known as the Northwest Territory. Before states like Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky even existed, Clark was actively charting their course.

When the Revolutionary War erupted, George Rogers Clark did not hesitate to answer the call to action. He quickly rose to prominence as a determined and capable leader who didn’t hesitate to raise funds and troops even without help from the regular army. His resourcefulness became evident as he led a series of successful campaigns in the Northwest, pushing British forces back and securing the region for the Americans. By the time the war came to a close, his efforts helped ensure that the Americans kept possession of this large, sprawling territory. Despite this, Clark struggled to receive the recognition and compensation he deserved. Financial struggles plagued him, as he had been forced to rely on personal debt to fund his military campaigns.

George Rogers Clark remains one of the unsung heroes of the American Revolution. He was a man who rose to the occasion—and he did so in spectacular fashion.
