This book certainly prompts deep reflection on the different types of relationships that exist; while sincere love is real, abusive dynamics, such as gaslighting, also occur. The heart becomes blinded when one is in love, which is why it is crucial to heed your instincts and reason in order to protect your self-esteem and your heart.

I went into Gaslighted by Love expecting a hard read, and it still caught me off guard. Hartwell doesn't ease you in — she drops you straight into a relationship that keeps rewriting its own rules, then walks you back through how she got there: the charm at the start, the way she began doubting her own memory, how even intimacy got turned into another way to control her. This isn't a book that's interested in plot so much as recognition, and more than once I found myself pausing just to sit with what she'd named. What struck me most is how unflinching she is about naming what was actually happening to her as it happened — no hindsight softening it. The middle section, where she's most stuck, is genuinely hard to get through, and it's meant to be. If you're hoping for a quick turn toward the "transformation" the subtitle promises, brace yourself — it takes its time getting there.

Listening to this one instead of reading it added something, too. Allison Pinet has a real gift for this material — steady and clear-eyed in the reflective passages, then noticeably tighter and more unsettled right alongside Hartwell during the story's hardest moments. I never lost my place in the timeline because I could just hear which version of Hartwell was talking.

If you've ever quietly wondered whether your own relationship looks like this, this book gives you both company and the words for it. And Pinet's narration never lets you forget how much weight that story is carrying.
