About this listen

A tale of love and adventure from the internationally bestselling author of Rebecca.

Lady Dona St Columb seems to revel in scandal: she is involved in every intrigue of the Restoration Court. But secretly, the shallowness of Court life disgusts her, and in her heart she longs for freedom and honest love. Retreating to Navron, her husband's Cornish estate, she seeks peace and solitude away from London. But Navron is being used as the base for a French pirate, an outlaw hunted all over Cornwall.

Instead of feeling fear, Dona's thirst for adventure has never been more aroused; in Jean-Benoit Aubéry she finds a sensitive man who would, like her, gamble his life for a moment's joy. Together they embark upon a quest rife with danger and glory, one which will force Dona to make the ultimate choice: will she sacrifice her lover to certain death, or risk her own life to save him?

Not my usual type of read but once into the story it became intriguing and I needed to know the outcome. The book is of course a classic and very much a product of its time and if listened to this with this in mind becomes enjoyable.

Beautifully narrated

I love this story so much, I have listened/read so many times- what’s not to love about the idea of leaving your kids in safe hands for a few days and running off for an adventure with a sexy pirate?

Perfect narration for such a wonderful story

Beautiful narration

After recently enjoying DdM's Jamaica Inn, I sought out more of her work and landed on Frenchman's Creek. From the beginning I found the protagonist, Dona, very unlikeable. However, I stuck with it in the hope that she'd come good. Unfortunately she doesn't - and the plot of the story is so far fetched I really struggled to engage with the story.
The narration of the audiobook is also lacking, with hardly any effort to change voices or was hard to tell who was saying what, apart with the constant, "he said/she said".
Didn't finish the book.

Very unlikeable protagonist
