About this listen

Billy has figured it out.

How to live free.

That’s "free" as in "it costs no money" at hotel buffets, fast-food drink fountains, beachside shower, his old van....

From the master of crime fiction comes an unexpectedly whimsical short story about this San Diego surfer whose life plan is working perfectly until he meets a wealthy woman at an art gallery opening (the hors d’oeuvres), falls in love, and then has to masquerade as an upstanding member of society.

This O. Henry-style yarn will surprise and delight Don Winslow fans and short-fiction devotees alike.

superb narration and another don Winslow little masterpiece.
really enjoy the reoccurring characters in each, finished broken before this and nice to see a character back here.

loved it

A beautifully narrated little gem. What’s not to like when you have a combination of Don Winslow and Ed Harris .

Great short story

Ed Harris is the GOAT narrator imo. Don Winslow is just great.
Deep hole is also great.

It’s free. That’s great.

This is a highly entertaining offering from Don Winslow to whet the appetite before the release of 'City on Fire' later this month.
Billy is basically a genial surf bum looking for a free lunch (and breakfast and dinner) as he searches for the perfect sugar mummy to make his freeloading life complete. Then he meets Angie and falls head over heals in love but there's something about her he hadn't anticipated and therein lies the humour. It reminded me, in heart and spirit, of John Steinbeck's wonderful 'Cannery Row' with Billy a sort of Mack like hopeless dreamer. I also loved meeting the Dawn Patrol again (more please). It's a short, sweet and perfect listen.

Lovely Little Amuse-Bouche
