From Bernice L. McFadden, one of the most cherished voices in contemporary fiction, comes a dramatic family saga spanning two generations of one mixed-race family during the second half of the 20th century.

When we meet Joseph Patrick, he’s in the midst of a classic midlife crisis. After dropping an obscene amount of money on a luxury watch — and leaving his wallet at the store — Joseph hops into a rented Porsche and takes off across the desert. He no sooner hits the open road than a coyote darts in front of the speeding car, wrecking it and leaving Joseph stranded in the heat, with no cell phone service — and no ID. The sight of the dying coyote sparks a memory that transports Joseph back to his childhood in rural Pennsylvania, shifting the story to the not-so-distant past, where the young Patrick family must navigate small-town attitudes about race and interracial marriage all while trying to rise into the American middle class.

Vividly told and by turns profoundly moving and darkly funny, Tisoy is an Audible Original Story about race, family, identity, and ambition. With a pitch-perfect performance from Ron Domingo (Law and Order: SVU), Tisoy examines the unwritten rules of the American Dream, the ones we’re forced to follow and the ones we must break.

Author of highly acclaimed novel Sugar, Bernice L. McFadden has written this quirky short story which focuses on racial stereotypes that some will find disturbing. The word Tisoy, is, apparently a term for a mixed race Filipino person.

Quirky short story

The story exposes how identity can be a performance forced by family or society, especially in the USA shaped by a history of racism and segregation. How a less persecuted takes on the identity and prejudices of the powerful race. Tisoy becomes a symbol of the gap between appearance and truth; the violence of being misread and the confusion of not being able to see yourself as you are in reality and politically. Naïveté or positive thinking isn’t an excuse. How does one combat being nurtured and raised to be blind to one’s true identity?

Misaligned identity

I only discovered Bernice McFadden three days ago but am devouring her work now. Her story telling is sublime as she creates strong characters and visually rich locations and landscapes. But her main gift is the way in which she imparts her political message and holds a mirror up to prejudice.

In this short story she suppresses decades of racial attitudes from across America into a narrative that is only a day long . It is extraordinarily done, a master class.

The narration is perfect. it only takes 90 minutes to listen to but you will be thinking about it for a long time after.

A rich, thought provoking short listen

Highly relevant short story for a reflection of life in today's USA under the current tyrannical regime and supported discriminatory practices.

Sadly, the reality is increasingly painful for all people of colour - even those who think they 'look white'.

Gripping short story
