Summary

Luca

I left him behind because I had no choice....

That's what I keep telling myself, but it doesn't make it any easier to sleep at night...or to drown out the words he kept repeating over and over the day we'd met: I just want to go home. That was eight long years ago and I'd only known him as Billy, a terrified 14-year-old I'd had to leave behind to save someone else.

But his name wasn't Billy and he's no longer a frightened kid lost in a world where he was nothing more than a possession. His name is Remy, and while I didn't recognize him upon meeting him again, he sure as hell remembers me.

It would be easier just to turn my back on him a second time, especially since that's exactly what he wants, but there's no way I can let the tormented young man go. At least not without trying to make things right first. The problem is, even if I can make up for leaving Remy behind so long ago, I'm not sure I'll be able to walk away from him twice.

I don't know what that means, but I do know that it scares the hell out of me.

Because needing in my world comes at a heavy price...one that not even I can afford to pay.

Remy

He gave me hope when I'd had none left, but he forgot about me just like all the others....

I fight. That's what I do. It's who I am.

But when Luca Covello walked into the dark, dirty room my captors were keeping me in so long ago, I'd already decided to do the one thing I hadn't in the three years since I'd been taken from my home and family.

Give up.

Then he'd been there, like a bright light in a sea of darkness, and I'd had something new to fight for, to stay alive for...the day Luca came back to get me like he'd promised.

Except he never came.

And now, eight years later, he's decided he wants to play the hero and save me. Well, I don't need saving.

Not anymore...not ever

Along with two years of sobriety under my belt, I've got a good job, a decent apartment, and I've managed to put my past where it belongs...in the past. No one, not even the gorgeous, mysterious businessman, is going to mess things up for me. If he's come seeking forgiveness, I'm fresh out.

And if he's come seeking something else...well, let's just say that when I'm done with him, there's no way he'll forget me this time around.

Heart-breaking and amazing story

I love these two men so much. Remi and Luca have a very hard and complicated past, and the way they navigate through everything going on in their lives and the past was amazing to read and even better to listen to.

luv it

I just luv sloan Kennedys books. compelling plot lines, great character development, and happy endings. my only complaint is that I cant stand her choice for narrator in the protector books...I tried but he is like nails on a chalkboard. aiden snow is the type of narrator the baretti men need.

Disjointed and unoriginal

Firstly, Michael Dean is an excellent narrator. So the issue I have is not related to the performance at all. The thing I find annoying is, I bought this book expecting a new series because with was Book 1 of the series. However it is clear it is a spinoff of another series and the author doesn’t even provide a synopsis of prior events before diving into this story; and this story is redolent with characters from another or maybe two other series, that have their own backstories and established arcs. Their presence and interactions with the main characters initially left me a bit lost and eventually just annoyed. It’s really ruined any desire I have to read the other books in this series or other series by this author. Also, having read another book by her a long time ago, the themes and character dynamics seem repetitive? Even within THIS book you can pretty much find the same repeated powers dynamics.

Emotional

Dean's voice just brings right in for the story. I practically cried through the whole book; tears of sorrow and tears of joy. As always loved Sloan's awesome book!

AMAZING!!!!!

An incredibly beautiful journey filled with regret, forgiveness, hurdles, and lots of love for Luca and Remy. A true roller coaster of emotions like only Sloane Kennedy can write. Shattered my heart and then put it back together piece by piece. Luca and Remy have both been through so much and it's really incredible that they can find a way to deal with their pasts in order to build an incredible future together. I really hope to see them in future books just like we see so many characters from past books, which I love, and I really hope to see a future book for Gio! Michael Pauley is an absolute genius when it comes to delivering these stories. He really has a way of really expressing everything that the characters are going through and it just makes the story an even better experience.

Beyond phenomenal!

Oh my God! What a phenomenal story! I cried so much! Sloane is extraordinary! This is not a book for the fainted at heart! It’s an incredible and very emotional roller coaster! Once started I couldn’t put it down! What the characters are going thru is heartbreaking and unimaginable! The struggle, the pain, the desperation are so intense I felt my heart with jumó out oh my chest! Wow! Just wow! The audiobook is exquisite because Michael Dean is the absolute best! Thank you Sloane and Michael for opening my eyes even more about how cruel the world we live in is and sadly will continue to be!

So good

Great audible addition to my library. I loved ebook version but this brings it to life. Luca and Remy’s story first in spinoff new series but we still get some of the protectors as well.

Nothing New....

Same story, different character names. 🙄 Same goes for the narrator. Nothing new with his performance. Same ole same ole lack of range.
