In Whitby, the frost gets into everything. The cobbles. The bones. The truth.

For thirty-three years, Barnaby Scaife has lived on the edge of Whitby — homeless, voiceless and shunned — because an entire town decided he was guilty of murdering his girlfriend, Lilly Ackroyd, after she vanished without a trace.

He has always denied it. And he never stopped hoping she would come back to him.

Then a young woman's bones are discovered bricked behind the wall of an old house, and his hopes fade.

DCI Frank Black, part of the original investigation, must now face the possibility that they condemned an innocent man, and let a killer walk free.

But the truth is evasive. Especially when the key suspect, Hector Dinsdale, is lost to dementia, while his sister, Edith, is non-verbal. Barnaby, too, struggles to communicate because of a brain injury.

Frank's best chance of righting the injustice is DI Gerry Carver-Foley, a detective who can find meaning in the most silent of places.

But as they close in on what really happened to Lilly, Frank's own secrets begin to weigh heavily — secrets that could shatter the person closest to him.

Every wall he tears down brings his own a brick closer to collapse.

Frost hides everything.

Until it thaws.

I've listened to the series in order. I just love the characters, how they have developed over the series and the relationship between Gerry and Frank. Brilliant narration as always. I really hope that the series continues.

Well worth the wait.

Frank and Gerry once again dig into the past to solve the puzzle of a woman's body found bricked up behind a wall in a house. As with the other books in the series there is a lot of sadness as past lives and secrets are gradually revealed. One thing I like about this series is that the crimes are actually believable and not as far fetched as in some other series. Once again we delve a little deeper into the lives of Frank and Gerry, and I absolutely love their friendship. All that said, I'm afraid this is probably my least favourite of the series so far, but it's still a great listen (shows just how good the previous books are!!)

Excellent narration, as always from Aubrey Parsons.

Realistic crime thriller

As I live in and know this part of Yorkshire, I get really deep into the stories, only one gripe please pronounce the name of the villages correctly, the 'W' is not pronounced in Ruswarp and Runswick Bay.

Excellent Listen

I was happy I was listening to this rather than reading because the way the story bobbed about between the present and the various periods of the past required the reader to "stay on their toes". As usual the relationship between the two main characters was crucial to the unfolding of this complex story line. if I have one minor criticism I think more differentiation between the voices of the female characters would have been useful. once again I found myself unable to stop listening when I really should have been doing something else. A testament to the quality of the story from this talented writer

an exercise in remembering the characters and watching how they fit into the whole!

these stories are brilliant and this latest one is no exception. Just brilliant . believable characters who's own struggles and friendships shadow our own . the crimes are dark but and it's a joy to see how Frank, Gerry and the team unpick the even more disturbing truth .

another fantastic tale from wes markin
